This position is for a Senior Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation Engineer who will work on a multi-year United Kingdom (UK) nuclear infrastructure programme. Our client is providing Project Management and Engineering services for this project, which is at the conceptual design phases involving a multi-billion investment in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

The Senior Engineer will support the Engineering Managers as the technical representative for engineering activities. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in engineering design efforts, including delivery of technical documents, execution of engineering schedule activities, quality checks, and overall project delivery.
  • Preparing technical reports, studies, designs, calculations using engineering software, and procurement documentation.
  • Participating in design reviews and ensuring comments are addressed satisfactorily.
  • Reviewing and coordinating deliverables of junior electrical control and instrumentation engineers.
  • Working independently, using engineering judgment, and devising new approaches to problem-solving.
  • Assisting with discipline work process execution in accordance with company and contract requirements.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Planning and conducting independent Electrical, Control and Instrumentation work requiring judgment in evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of relevant engineering techniques.
  • Executing Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms deliverables according to requirements and design criteria.
  • Creating plans, specifications, and drawings to support facility designs to a RIBA 3 development.
  • Supporting studies into environmental impacts and sustainability of proposed designs.
  • Coordinating efforts with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, clients, vendors, contractors, and other functional groups.
  • Preparing, coordinating, and reviewing designs, studies, reports, and proposals.
  • Participating in 3D Model reviews and safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP).
  • Identifying issues and clarifying areas of complexity during all phases of architectural design work.
  • Supporting informal studies and technical briefings with customers, suppliers, and other departments.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Automation / Controls / Instrumentation, Electro-Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or related subject) from an accredited university or college.
  • A minimum of 15 years’ progressive Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working in nuclear or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary teams in a project delivery environment.
  • Chartership with the IET (or similar).
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria, guides, procedures, and codes relevant to electrical, control, and instrumentation discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering techniques, design of engineered systems, and engineering calculations.
  • Prior experience in industrial process facility design preferred.
  • Knowledge of control system verification to recognised standards, e.g., BS 61508.
  • Ability to read and understand building drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of CAD design methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of NavisWorks.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Relevant industrial experience; general nuclear experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
