Pattern: Flexible / Agile Working Service Care Solutions are currently recruiting for an experienced Traffic Engineering Team Manager to join a public sector organisation on a permanent basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Traffic / Highway Engineer with strong team management experience to take a lead role in delivering a major programme of highway improvements across the county.
The successful candidate will manage a growing, multi-disciplinary Traffic Engineering team, overseeing the delivery of highway and traffic engineering schemes from design through to construction.
The programme includes road safety, active travel, sustainable transport, accessibility, congestion reduction and wider highway improvement projects .
About the Role
As Traffic Engineering Team Manager, you will provide confident leadership across the Traffic Engineering function, ensuring projects are delivered safely, effectively, to budget and in line with relevant standards and legislation.
- Managing and providing clear leadership to the Traffic Engineering team.
- Overseeing project management, engineering design and contract management activities.
- Leading the delivery of highway and traffic engineering schemes throughout their lifecycle.
- Acting as the engineering lead on transport projects.
- Managing project programmes, resources, budgets and competing priorities.
- Ensuring designs comply with relevant Df T guidance, national standards and best practice.
- Overseeing the construction stage of projects, including works delivered under NEC or equivalent contracts.
- Ensuring appropriate health and safety arrangements are maintained throughout projects, including compliance with CDM Regulations.
- Supporting the delivery of road safety, active travel, public transport, accessibility, sustainability and congestion reduction initiatives.
- Managing and developing the team through training, experience and innovative ways of working, including the use of digital tools and AI.
- Building effective relationships with internal teams, contractors, strategic partners, senior stakeholders and elected Members.
- Driving continuous improvement through lessons learned, feedback and improved project delivery processes.
- Ensuring the team delivers cost-effective, high-quality engineering solutions.
- Supporting the continued development and growth of the service.
About You
The ideal candidate will have
- Proven experience managing and leading an engineering team .
- Significant experience within highway and traffic engineering design , including Active Travel projects.
- Experience of construction management and delivering engineering projects through to completion.
- Experience acting as an engineering lead on transport/highway projects.
- Strong project programming, coordination and resource management experience.
- Knowledge of relevant highway design standards, guidance and best practice.
- Strong understanding of construction health & safety legislation and CDM Regulations 2015 .
- The ability to act as Principal Designer under CDM .
- Experience managing contractors and overseeing construction delivery.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and balance competing priorities.
- A proactive approach to continuous improvement and developing people.
- An understanding of sustainable transport and the role engineering can play in reducing environmental impact.
Requirements
- Degree in an Engineering discipline .
- Membership of a relevant professional body, such as ICE, CIHT or IHE .
- Full, valid UK driving licence, as travel throughout the county will be required.
- Willingness to undertake out-of-hours duties when required.
