This work is delivered at NSG’s own offices and purpose-built facilities and nuclear sites across the UK. The delivery and management of these projects and programmes of work is carried out by a skilled workforce composed of both white-collar and blue-collar personnel in technical, administrative, and physical roles.

The Role

To perform activities and carry out assessments on tasks, equipment or environments, which have radiological impact.

To ensure compliance with Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and as instructed by the Radiation Protection Supervisor [RPS]

Key Objectives

Monitoring & Recording

  • Carry out tasks as required for specific projects including:

  • Radiological surveys and analyses
  • Routine Health Physics tasks including:


  • Response checks of instrumentation
  • Monitoring of personnel and areas
  • Designated area access / egress control
  • Air sampling
  • PPE / RPE inspection
  • Possible use of specialised RPE, i.e. PBASO (pressurised breathing air suit operative)
  • Working party compliance with radiological controls:


  • Clearance monitoring
  • Decontamination of areas, items and personnel


  • Prepare and maintain all necessary records, and associated documentation
  • Assist project engineers as necessary with work/test instructions and studies
  • Report progress and results to the RPS /Supervisor / Site Manager

Technical and Commercial Liaison

  • Liaise with internal colleagues as necessary in order to contribute to the development of business by internal referral and communication of appropriate information and intelligence
  • Interface with client representatives as appropriate to complement the technical integrity and competence of the Company, and/or to provide an informed source or referral

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 Radiation Protection or City & Guilds – Radiation Safety Practices - Essential
  • ONC / HNC or equivalent in relevant discipline - Desirable
  • Membership of appropriate technical / professional body - Desirable
  • Level 2 Health & Safety in the Workplace or equivalent - Relevant training will be provided if required

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven experience of health physics surveillance - Essential
  • Understands radiological issues, radioactive shielding and barrier theories and protocols for safe working - Essential
  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations inc: COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, RIDDOR - Essential
  • Compliance with Radiological Protection/IRR 99 - Essential
  • Used to dealing with confidential and commercial information - Desirable
  • Familiar with QSHEW operating procedures and requirements etc. - Desirable

Skills & Abilities

  • Competent user of MS Office - Essential
  • Able to organise and prioritise own work - Essential
  • Maintain simple records and documents in a readable format - Desirable
  • Carry out simple arithmetic calculations - Essential
  • Utilisation of technical or scientific data - Essential
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of colleagues at all levels and with external stakeholders and contractors - Desirable
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 / 14001 & 45001 - Desirable

Package - Staff only

Hours - 37.5 hours per week

Overtime – 37.5-60hours per week – Time and half

Overtime – 60+ hours per week or Sundays – Double time
