We’re proud to be supporting the search for an Associate Quantity Surveyor to join a leading UK construction and infrastructure consultancy, working on one of the country’s most exciting and high-profile infrastructure programmes.


Our client’s Infrastructure division delivers commercial and project management services across a wide range of sectors including energy, utilities, transport, water and major capital projects. They support clients on complex schemes that are shaping the future of the UK’s infrastructure, providing specialist expertise across the full project lifecycle.


As part of their continued growth, they are looking for an Associate Quantity Surveyor to join their Birmingham team and play a key role in the delivery of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade programme.

The Role

As an Associate Quantity Surveyor, you will provide commercial leadership across a portfolio of infrastructure and energy transmission projects. Working closely with senior stakeholders, contractors and client teams, you will oversee commercial performance, manage risk, and ensure the successful delivery of project objectives throughout the project lifecycle.


You will play a key role in mentoring and developing junior team members whilst helping to shape commercial strategy across major infrastructure works.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead commercial and cost management activities across major infrastructure projects.
  • Provide strategic commercial advice to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Oversee the administration of NEC contracts, including compensation events, change control and early warnings.
  • Lead cost planning, estimating, forecasting and financial reporting activities.
  • Manage project budgets, expenditure, cash flow and commercial performance.
  • Support procurement strategies, tender evaluations and contract negotiations.
  • Drive value engineering initiatives to maximise project outcomes.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Ensure robust commercial governance and reporting standards are maintained.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors and project teams.
  • Support dispute avoidance and commercial issue resolution where required.
  • Mentor and develop Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors within the team.
  • Contribute to business growth, client development and project-winning activities.
  • Support the delivery of best practice commercial management across the wider infrastructure portfolio.


Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience within infrastructure, utilities, energy, power transmission or major civil engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.
  • Proven experience managing commercial activities across complex infrastructure programmes.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and client-facing skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness and financial acumen.
  • Experience leading teams and mentoring junior professionals.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams within a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.


Desirable

  • MRICS qualified or working towards chartership.
  • Experience working on energy transmission or utilities projects.
  • Experience operating within large-scale capital delivery programmes.
  • Familiarity with programme controls, project controls or PMO environments.
  • Experience working within consultancy environments.
