The role of Buyer is a key supporting role within the Procurement team, responsible for providing proactive, responsive purchasing support service to the business community. The role demands an individual who will continually look for improvement while ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and service levels. The role works closely with the planning team to ensure available material coverage for both internal and external manufacturing while adhering to inventory stock levels.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving regular emails and telephone calls from suppliers, arranging face‑to‑face meetings and providing them with any required information (e.g., forecasts).
  • Planning required material and placing purchase orders using the company’s e‑Procurement system, ensuring correct nominal coding, prices, dates, and accuracy.
  • Considering various delivery addresses and entering changes after confirmations are received.
  • If stock is ex‑works, handling incoming logistics by negotiating and arranging.
  • Chasing paperwork if not received with goods.
  • Chasing overdue purchase orders and pushing material out if stock levels are high or production plan changes; expediting and escalating if required.
  • Continuously checking stock levels for below reorder points and revising them where necessary.
  • Investigating goods‑received queries and assisting the accounts team with pricing discrepancies.
  • Continuous improvement initiatives such as cost savings, payment terms, credit limits, and tendering.
  • Supplier management – visits, ratings, KPIs, contracts, evaluations, scorecards.
  • Managing third‑party manufacturing suppliers to ensure on‑time delivery of goods and material.
  • Supplier quality – handling returns and correspondence.
  • Internal reporting to the Materials Manager.
  • Advising accounts on what is expected to be delivered in the short term.
  • Working closely with accounts to ensure payments are made on time.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Prior experience in a purchasing role is desirable, with practical knowledge and experience of purchasing principles and practices.
  • CIPS preferred but not essential.
  • Knowledge of payment terms and Incoterms.
