What are we looking for

Working within our stack design and verification team, reporting to the Head of Stack Development you will support the design, development, prototyping, and validation of next-generation full-scale PEM electrolyser stacks and clamping skid frame systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and executing experimental test programs, validating mechanical performance, and supporting the transition from prototype to industrial-scale deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Duties
    • Test & Verification
      • Develop and execute verification and validation (V&V) plans for full-scale PEM electrolyser stacks and clamping skid frame assemblies.
      • Design and conduct mechanical, hydraulic and thermal test programs.
      • Define test procedures, acceptance criteria, instrumentation requirements, and data acquisition strategies.
      • Perform stack pressure, leak, load, compression, vibration, and endurance testing.
      • Support FAT/SAT and prototype commissioning activities.
    • Prototype Development
      • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and electrochemistry teams during stack and skid frame prototyping.
      • Assist in the assembly, integration, and troubleshooting of prototype electrolyser systems.
      • Evaluate structural integrity, clamping force distribution, sealing performance, and operational reliability.
      • Support design iterations based on test outcomes and root-cause investigations.
    • Data Analysis & Reporting
      • Analyse test data and generate detailed technical reports with clear conclusions and recommendations.
      • Develop performance validation metrics and reliability benchmarks.
      • Use statistical and engineering analysis methods to identify trends, anomalies, and failure mechanisms.
      • Present findings to internal engineering teams and project stakeholders.
    • Equipment & Lab Development
      • Specify and support procurement of test equipment, sensors, DAQ systems, and instrumentation.
      • Develop safe operating procedures for hydrogen and high-pressure testing environments.
      • Support calibration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of R&D test facilities.
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration
      • Work closely with design engineers, manufacturing, suppliers, and project teams to ensure robust product verification.
      • Contribute to DFMEA, risk assessments, and verification reviews.
      • Support scaling activities from prototype through pilot and commercial deployment.
    • Development & Continuous Improvement
      • Contribute to continuous improvement of products, processes, and R&D methodologies.
      • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, materials, and industry developments.
      • Support knowledge sharing and lessons learned across projects.
      • Identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements.
    • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
      • Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
      • Ensure safe working practices in offices, workshops, and testing environments.
      • Identify and report hazards, risks, and incidents.
      • Support risk assessments and implementation of appropriate controls.
      • Promote a positive safety culture within R&D activities.
    • Quality & Compliance
      • Ensure work meets required quality standards, specifications, and regulations.
      • Follow defined processes for design control, testing, and documentation.
      • Support validation and verification activities.
      • Maintain accurate and traceable technical records.
      • Contribute to continuous improvement of quality systems and processes.

About You

Knowledge and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in testing, verification, or validation of industrial systems or electrochemical technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with test rigs, instrumentation, DAQ systems, and experimental validation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical assemblies, structural loading, sealing systems, and pressure testing.
  • Experience analysing engineering data using tools such as MATLAB, Python or similar.
  • Familiarity with CAD models and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices, especially relating to hydrogen, pressure systems, or high-current systems.

Desirable

  • Experience with PEM electrolyser, fuel cell, or hydrogen systems.
  • Knowledge of stack compression systems and clamping frame design.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) correlation and validation testing.
  • Familiarity with IEC, ISO, ASME, or hydrogen-related standards.
  • Experience with automated test systems and PLC-controlled equipment.
  • Understanding of electrochemical performance testing and degradation analysis.
