An experienced Risk Business Analyst / Risk SME is required to join a major energy trading organisation on a high-profile programme. Working across Market Risk, Credit Risk, Front Office and Middle Office, you’ll help improve risk processes, strengthen controls and ensure the business has a clear and accurate view of its trading exposures.
The role requires a strong understanding of the commodity trading lifecycle, from trade capture and valuation through to exposure management, risk reporting and limit monitoring. You’ll be working closely with business stakeholders to understand their challenges, challenge existing processes and translate risk requirements into practical solutions. The programme covers physical and financial commodities, with a particular focus on Gas and Power.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Working with Front Office, Market Risk, Credit Risk and Middle Office to gather requirements and improve risk processes
- Understanding how trading activity translates into market and counterparty credit exposures across products and portfolios
- Supporting requirements around VaR, stress testing, sensitivities, scenario analysis, P&L explain and risk reporting
- Analysing counterparty exposure, credit limits, potential future exposure (PFE), collateral and margining
- Reviewing trade capture, valuation and position data to identify discrepancies affecting risk calculations and reporting
- Supporting risk controls, limit monitoring, breach management and escalation processes
- Writing business requirements and functional specifications, translating risk needs into clear deliverables for technology teams
- Supporting UAT and validating risk calculations, reports, controls and business processes
- Identifying gaps and opportunities to improve risk management processes across the trading lifecycle
Strong Business Analysis experience within an energy or commodity trading environment is essential. A solid understanding of Market Risk and Credit Risk, ideally with experience across both, is required. Experience engaging with Front Office traders, risk functions and Middle Office teams is also necessary.
Knowledge of the commodity trading lifecycle, including trade capture, valuation, exposure management and risk reporting is important. Familiarity with market risk measures such as VaR, stress testing, sensitivities, P&L explain and scenario analysis is beneficial.
Understanding of counterparty credit risk, exposure calculations, credit limits, PFE, collateral and margining is crucial. Experience gathering requirements, documenting processes and supporting technology delivery is expected.
Strong analytical skills, with the ability to investigate risk discrepancies and understand their underlying business drivers are needed. Experience with UAT, testing and validation of risk calculations, reporting or controls is advantageous.
Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between business and technology teams are essential. SQL experience would be beneficial, particularly for investigating trade and risk data. Experience with an ETRM platform such as Endur would be advantageous.
This is a business-facing risk role, not a system integration or ETRM configuration position. The priority is to understand how risk is managed within an energy trading house, identify where processes or controls need improving, and ensure technology solutions meet the needs of the business. Someone with experience as a Risk BA or Risk SME within a commodity trading environment, particularly across Gas and Power, would be well suited to the role.
