Job Overview

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented accountant to join our growing team supporting a UK-based accountancy practice. This role involves managing the day-to-day accounting needs of multiple clients across various industries. You will work extensively with Xero, Sage, Excel, and Dext, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, VAT compliance, and effective communication with clients.

Key Responsibilities

1. Bookkeeping and Transaction Management

  • Maintain accurate records of daily financial transactions using Xero and Sage.
  • Process and reconcile bank, credit card, and petty cash transactions.
  • Manage sales and purchase ledgers, including invoicing, supplier payments, and credit control, using Dext.
  • Record payroll journals from internal systems or external payroll providers.
  • Post accruals, prepayments, and other month-end journal entries.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including control and intercompany accounts.

2. VAT and Compliance

  • Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns in line with HMRCs Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
  • Ensure correct VAT treatment for transactions, including reverse charge and other applicable rules.
  • Maintain documentation and audit trails for VAT compliance.

3. Management Reporting

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts including:
    • Profit and Loss Statement
    • Balance Sheet
    • Cash Flow Forecasts
    • Budget vs Actual variance reports
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with internal teams and clients.
  • Support clients with financial insights and performance analysis.

Requirements

  • Part-qualified CA, ACCA, or CIMA.
  • 23 years experience in an accounting or bookkeeping role, ideally within a UK accountancy firm.
  • Proficient in Xero, Sage, Dext, and advanced Excel.
  • Solid understanding of UK VAT rules and general compliance requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage deadlines across multiple clients.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial data clearly.
  • Knowledge of FRS 102 and FRS 105 is an added advantage.
