Lead the people and engineering standards powering the next chapter of our data platform. We’ve invested significantly in modernising our technology landscape and strengthening our data capabilities. The opportunity now is to evolve, optimise and scale our Snowflake data platform, while creating the standards, controls and engineering capability needed for what comes next.
As our Data Engineering Manager, you’ll lead experienced Data Engineering leaders and multiple engineering squads responsible for delivering a portfolio of data products across Vanquis. You’ll shape how we engineer, govern and operate our Snowflake platform, with ownership spanning Data Vault 2.0 modelling, engineering standards, cost, resilience, quality and platform controls. This is a role for someone who can combine strong technical authority with inclusive people leadership. You’ll create the environment in which engineering teams can perform at their best, while influencing decisions that affect the future of our data platform.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Lead, support and develop Data Engineering leaders and their squads so that our people have the direction, capability and environment they need to deliver high-quality data products.
- Own and evolve our Data Vault 2.0 modelling approach and wider engineering standards so that the platform remains controlled, resilient, efficient and ready to support changing business needs.
- Strengthen platform controls across areas such as data access, masking, classification and environment management so that our data is managed responsibly and we can provide clear evidence for regulatory, risk and audit requirements.
- Oversee portfolio planning, dependencies, risks and service handovers across internal teams and delivery partners so that complex data initiatives move forward with clear ownership and effective collaboration.
- Champion automation, CI/CD and streamlined engineering practices so that teams can improve delivery flow, reduce legacy processes and spend more time creating meaningful value.
Why this role matters: Our data platform supports important regulatory, commercial and strategic outcomes across Vanquis. This role provides leadership across multiple engineering squads and helps ensure that the platform is governed, resilient, cost-effective and capable of supporting the organisation’s future needs. You’ll work closely with Data Engineering, Architecture, Data Governance, Risk, Compliance, Security, Operations, Service teams and third-party delivery partners. You’ll have the opportunity to influence senior stakeholders, challenge constructively and see how your decisions contribute to meaningful outcomes across the organisation.
Our Data Engineering approach:
- Engineering with purpose: We connect technical decisions to the outcomes they create for our customers, colleagues and business.
- Automation first: We look for opportunities to automate repeatable activity, improve delivery flow and reduce unnecessary manual processes.
- Controlled by design: Quality, security, resilience, cost and compliance are considered throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Shared ownership: Engineering teams collaborate with Architecture, Governance, Risk, Security and Operations from design through to service handover.
- Continuous learning: We invest in developing skills, knowledge and capability.
Essential experience:
- Significant data engineering experience, including experience leading engineers or senior technical contributors.
- Deep experience of Snowflake at scale, including platform architecture, access controls, operations and cost governance.
- Strong practical knowledge of Data Vault 2.0, with experience setting or owning modelling standards.
- Experience using Coalesce, dbt or another metadata-driven transformation platform.
- Experience leading, developing and building engineering capability, including recruitment, performance and succession.
- An understanding of engineering within a regulated, controlled or similarly complex environment.
- Experience managing complex delivery across multiple teams, dependencies and stakeholders.
- The ability to communicate technical subjects clearly and influence senior technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working with third-party partners and geographically distributed teams.
You don’t need to match every point perfectly. What matters is that you can bring together technical leadership, sound judgement and people leadership to help us strengthen and evolve our Data Engineering capability.
Useful, but not essential:
- SnowPro, Data Vault, data management, leadership or management qualifications.
- Experience within financial services or another highly regulated sector.
- Experience of semantic modelling, analytics enablement or internal data marketplaces.
- A degree in a relevant subject, although equivalent practical technical experience is equally valued.
This is an opportunity to broaden your influence across a significant data engineering portfolio, develop engineering leaders and shape standards that will guide how our data platform evolves. You’ll work across technical strategy, people leadership, governance, portfolio delivery and senior stakeholder engagement, giving you the scope to deepen your expertise and develop towards broader senior engineering, data or technology leadership opportunities.
