Evening Standard Ltd. is a media owner that provides Culture & News for Londoners everywhere.
Through our story-first digital centric publishing, we deliver content across digital, audio, video, and social platforms and we have a brand new weekly print product, The London Standard.
We are based in Finsbury Square, London.
About you
You are a collaborative and results-driven photojournalist with long experience as part of a picture desk team. Your knowledge of News, Sport, and Lifestyle will allow you to source the imagery that matters for the Standard across all our platforms.
Skills and experience
- A successful track record in a digital and print Picture Desk role, ideally within a news organisation.
- Ability to work as part of a Newsroom team under the guidance of senior executives to produce digital-first content.
- Contacts across the industry to enhance our agenda-setting and impactful coverage.
- Ability to work constructively and collaboratively.
- You have expertise in SEO best practices and their use in digital content.
The team and role purpose
The picture desk is a pivotal part of the new digital-first newsroom and helps spearhead the drive for image-led commissioning.
It will help ensure the Standard maintains its position as London’s number one authority on News, Sport and Culture and continues to be first with the stories that matter.
To build a collaborative team everyone will be expected to be in the office a minimum of four days a week when working week-day daytime shifts. This will apply on a pro-rated basis for those who are part-time.
Successful candidates will be expected to take a flexible approach to working patterns and to be available to work evenings and weekends if required by their departmental rota.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Work across several platforms, including print, to supply visual content as needed
- Helping to ensure that all content is of the highest quality while being legally safe and compliant.
- Co-ordinating and managing freelancers where necessary.
- Support picture editor and deputise in their absence
- Proactively carrying out picture research, as well as controlling workflows
- Monitoring picture feeds – highlighting breaking news and other relevant images
- Able to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced and changing environment
- Produce/pitch engaging and original picture stories – and pitch these ideas at news conference
- Maintaining and continuing to grow a strong network of contacts across the picture agencies.
- Responsibility for helping to ensure that newsroom targets are hit and working as part of a team to achieve this.
- Ensuring that all digital content is optimised for search engines, driving organic traffic and improving our visibility in search results.
- Working with the Standard’s commercial department to ensure editorial is able to support commercial endeavours.
