Do you have a strong network of contacts across the tool and plant hire industry?
Can you build relationships, spot opportunities, and turn them into long-term business?
If that sounds like you, and you’d like to play a key role in growing an ambitious national brokerage operation backed by one of the UK’s leading independent hire companies, we’d love to hear from you.
About us
The Hireman is a growing, independent tool hire company, supplying professional contractors across London, the Home Counties, and beyond.
Founded in 1985, we’ve built an excellent reputation for service, reliability, and going out of our way to help our customers.
We believe we’re successful because we make life easy for our clients – and we give our people the tools, trust, and support to make that happen.
Alongside our extensive fleet of owned equipment, we operate a growing cross hire and brokerage division, providing customers with access to specialist equipment nationwide.
What makes us different is that we’re not simply a broker – we understand hire.
Our experienced hire controllers, technical knowledge, and substantial owned fleet allow us to offer customers a level of service and expertise that pure brokerage businesses cannot match.
The role
We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Business Development Manager to support the growth of our UK-wide Cross Hire & Brokerage operation.
This is a field-based role with national responsibility, focused on developing new customer relationships, increasing revenue, and expanding our brokerage network.
While the role can be based remotely, candidates will ideally be located within the Midlands or North of London to provide practical access to customers and suppliers across the country.
You’ll work independently with significant autonomy and responsibility for driving growth within this important area of the business.
Key responsibilities include
- Growing our national customer base for cross hire and brokerage services.
- Identifying and securing new business opportunities across construction, infrastructure, facilities management, and related sectors.
- Developing relationships with contractors, procurement teams, and hire industry contacts nationwide.
- Managing and expanding existing customer accounts.
- Coordinating the supply of hire equipment through our supplier network and owned fleet.
- Working closely with our hire controllers to deliver exceptional service and find solutions for customers’ equipment requirements.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with key supply partners across the UK.
- Negotiating rates, terms, and agreements to maximise profitability and customer value.
- Tracking market opportunities and identifying areas for business growth.
- Representing The Hireman at industry events, customer meetings, networking opportunities, and supplier visits.
- What We’re Looking For
- Proven business development or sales experience within the tool hire, plant hire, equipment hire, or related construction sectors.
- Strong understanding of the UK cross hire and brokerage market.
- Existing network of industry contacts and relationships.
- Track record of generating new business and growing customer accounts.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Commercially aware with strong negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Organised, proactive, and solution-focused.
- Full UK driving licence.
- What’s on offer
- Negotiable salary, depending on experience.
- Uncapped bonus scheme linked to performance and growth.
- Company vehicle or car allowance.
- Enhanced contributory Workplace Pension.
- Health Cash Plan with virtual GP service.
- Free tool hire for personal use and staff discount on purchases.
- Flexible home-based working with national travel.
- Support from an experienced team of hire professionals.
- Genuine opportunity to shape and grow a key part of the business.
- Fresh fruit, snacks, and drinks in our depots.
- Regular social events and company parties.
- A Christmas turkey (or alternative seasonal gift).
This is an opportunity to build something.
You’ll have the freedom to develop the role, influence the direction of our brokerage division, and make a tangible impact on the company’s growth.
If you understand hire, know how to build relationships, and enjoy creating opportunities where others see obstacles, we’d love to hear from you.
