- Position Description
The role consists of working as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop new product design projects in accordance with APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and relevant SOM guidelines, from concept through to full product launch.
You will support the Lead Mechanical Engineer where required and, as part of the wider team, be responsible for creating design briefs for company-wide approval, performance predictions, cost target achievement, and delivery against agreed project requirements.
Additionally, the role includes identifying sustainability risks and appropriate mitigation measures, highlighting term sustainable business objectives across operations, processes, supply chain, products and systems.
You will support the company's path to net zero carbon emissions and will undertake embodied carbon calculations for both new and existing products.
This will include creation of Environmental Product Declarations and completion of product lifecycle carbon assessments.
The role also requires close collaboration with product development teams to continuously improve designs and reduce lifecycle emissions, as well as working with operations and environmental management teams to report on and reduce plant-level carbon emissions.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out engineering calculations, including performance predictions and acoustic analysis
- Selecting and specifying critical components to fulfil project requirements
- Creating 3D models, layout drawings, and schematics
- Structuring Bills of Material
- Implementing component upgrades on existing standard product ranges
- Working to deadlines & cost requirements
- Carrying out embodied carbon calculations
- Creation of Environmental Product Declarations
- Product lifecycle analysis for carbon emissions
- Interface with multiple business functions to enhance the business's sustainability goals
- Required Education & Qualifications
- On track to achieving a First or Second class degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or any associated disciplines of engineering (e. g., Automotive/Motorsport, Aerospace, Energy etc).
- Good theoretical and practical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, particularly those centered around thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, especially refrigeration.
- Good theoretical and practical understanding of manufacturing engineering.
- Ability to produce comprehensive and coherent technical reports.
- An interest in sustainability, low carbon design, and environmental performance.
- Enthusiasm, curiosity and a desire to contribute positively to product development and sustainability activities.
- Be able to communicate effectively at all levels; you will need to be a proactive individual as you will be required to obtain information effectively by going out and speaking to employees within the business or communicating externally with various suppliers.
- Proficient using the MS Office suite (especially Excel, with VBA experience desirable).
- Professional attitude at all times, not only will you be representing Airedale, you also represent the department.
- Desirable: Experience with 3D CAD modelling (Solid Edge, Solid Works, or similar).
- Experience with 2D drafting (e. g., Auto CAD).
- Experience using ERP systems (training will be provided for using SAP, our chosen ERP).
- Proficient using the MS Office suite (especially Excel, with VBA experience beneficial).

- Airedale has a history of taking on placement students in full‑time roles upon graduation, with 2 previous placement students now working here on a permanent basis.
This placement role is no exception, and can be viewed as a year‑long interview process for the successful candidate.
The position of the role within the product development team also puts the successful candidate in a prime position to work with us on final year project ideas, which we are more than happy to work on in collaboration with the student during the final year of study at university.
