About the role

We're looking for an experienced Technical Consultant (Android) to join a highly skilled engineering team delivering secure software solutions for defence and national security environments.

This is an opportunity to work on long-term, mission-critical programmes where you'll design, build and deploy Android-based capabilities that make a genuine impact. You'll work directly with customers, influence technical direction and solve complex engineering challenges in environments where security, reliability and innovation are paramount.

If you enjoy working on technically demanding projects, collaborating with talented engineers and taking ownership of solutions from concept through to deployment, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing, developing and deploying secure Android applications using Java.
  • Working closely with customers to understand requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
  • Supporting the full software development lifecycle, from design through testing, deployment and ongoing support.
  • Producing technical documentation and presenting solutions during design reviews.
  • Reviewing high and low-level designs produced by partners and subcontractors.
  • Representing the business in technical stakeholder meetings and customer engagements.
  • Building secure systems that protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive information.
  • Solving complex technical problems in highly secure environments where innovation is encouraged.

What we're looking for

  • Strong commercial experience developing Android applications using Java.
  • Good knowledge of Java, alongside experience with Python and Bash.
  • Experience delivering software through the full development lifecycle.
  • A solid understanding of secure software engineering principles and authentication technologies.
  • Experience designing technical solutions from documented requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage directly with customers and stakeholders.
  • A proactive mindset with a passion for solving difficult technical challenges.

Desirable experience

  • Any of the following would be a real advantage:
  • Android Open Source Project (AOSP) development.
  • iOS development using Swift.
  • Linux development.
  • Kubernetes or experience deploying to air-gapped environments.
  • Development of non-HTTP network protocols or low-level networking.
  • Privacy-focused or innovative computer science research.
  • Experience building distributed or large-scale data processing systems.

Please note: Due to the nature of the work, successful applicants must be eligible to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance and hold British nationality. The role is primarily based in West Yorkshire, with occasional travel and overnight stays at customer locations across the UK.

How to prepare for a job interview at Talent Locker

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Talent Locker uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
