About The Role
The Shift Engineering Technician at our Livingston bakery is a key role in improving and optimising the operational performance of the bakery.
You will be responsible for maintaining compliance with all company and regulatory standards.
Through an application of multi-skilled engineering expertise, you will be ensuring that the factory operates at target OEE levels by responding quickly to breakdowns and below standard machine performance and applying a continuous improvement approach to root cause and eliminating performance issues.
You will also be expected to train engineering, production and other colleagues, as required, to enable them to perform their roles effectively.
Co-operation to maintain adequate technician cover during periods of increased operational demand is essential.
- Main Responsibilities
- Fault Finding and Problem Resolution
- Provide a rapid, efficient and pro-active response to machine breakdowns and change-overs to ensure OEE objectives are achieved.
- Use problem-solving techniques, manufacturers’ equipment manuals, online troubleshooting guides, telephone helplines, as required, to resolve breakdowns as quickly as possible.
- Pro-actively identify and implement solutions to recurring problems.
- Planned Maintenance and Continuous Improvement
- Carry our planned preventive maintenance activities in accordance with the PM schedule, rectify any defects identified and recommend improvements to the schedules to improve the effectiveness of planned maintenance.
- Pro-actively contribute to improvement projects to improve efficiencies and yields, and reduce costs.
- Contribute to capital projects to ensure the effective installation, commissioning and operation of new equipment so that the anticipated benefits are delivered as quickly as possible.
- Maintain all site buildings, facilities and factory services (heating, lighting, power, site security, drainage etc).
- Health, Safety, Quality and Compliance
- Comply with all Company and regulatory quality, food safety, hygiene and health, safety and environmental standards, policies and procedures.
Adopt a “clean as you go” policy.
Take responsibility for your own and your colleagues’ safety.
Ensure that all work is carried out safely and no colleagues are put at risk.
Keep the workshop secure and tidy at all times; participating in the cleaning rota as required.
- Communication and Team Collaboration
- Maintain good communications with your colleagues in engineering, production and other functions so that they are aware of the status of lines, breakdowns and other relevant information.
Effective shift handovers are a key element of good communications.
- Provide support to your engineering colleagues to help them resolve issues as quickly as possible. Seek support and advice where necessary.
- Training and Professional Development
- Take responsibility for your own personal and professional development.
Actively seek learning opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills.
Adopt a “learn by doing” approach and take advantage of any opportunities provided to attend on-or-off-the-job training.
- Supervise and train Trainee Technicians and Apprentices as required.
You may be required to carry out such other duties as reasonably requested.
Who We Are Looking For
- A recognised Engineering qualification, such as a Modern Engineering Apprenticeship (SVQ Level 3) or equivalent.
An HNC in an Engineering or Electrical discipline would be advantageous.
- Previous experience in a maintenance role within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong mechanical or electrical engineering expertise, with a working knowledge of the complementary discipline.
- Some knowledge of PLCs, electronics and pneumatic systems.
- Excellent fault-finding, diagnostic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret machine manuals and engineering diagrams.
- A proactive approach to maintenance, both reactive and preventative.
- Strong numeracy, literacy and IT skills.
- A collaborative team player who works well with colleagues and supports a positive working environment.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional development, with a willingness to embrace new skills and technologies.
