Jones Whyte

Jones Whyte is a Scottish Law Firm of around 300 people, with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh. We were named Firm of the Year (over 250 employees) at the Scottish Legal Awards 2026, and Scottish Top Employer of the Year at The Herald & s1jobs Top Employer Awards 2025.

The opportunity

You will run your own asylum and immigration cases with guidance where needed, appear at the First-tier, and work with Counsel on Court of Session matters. This isn’t a role where you spend years drafting for someone else. You’ll handle cases from first instruction to final decision, for clients whose outcome depends on the work you do.

The team

You will join an Immigration Team led by Phulah Pal made up of 7 Solicitors, an experienced Legal Secretary and Legal Assistants. Admin and file support sit with the secretary and legal assistants, so your time goes on legal work. You’ll report directly to Phulah, with regular file reviews and support on complex matters while you build your caseload.

What you will do

  • Manage your own caseload of asylum, human rights and immigration matters under legal aid and private funding
  • Take instructions from clients, often through interpreters, and prepare statements, applications and appeal bundles
  • Represent clients at Tribunal hearings
  • Instruct and work alongside Counsel and expert witnesses on Court of Session and complex Tribunal matters
  • Prepare and submit legal aid applications and accounts in line with SLAB requirements
  • Support colleagues in the team with case preparation and cover when needed
  • Work towards agreed department targets, with regular reviews of your caseload

What we’re looking for

  • Qualified solicitor (NQ to 2 years’ PQE) with a restricted practising certificate
  • Experience of immigration or asylum casework, including running matters from start to finish
  • Working knowledge of SLAB legal aid requirements
  • Confidence working with vulnerable clients and through interpreters
  • The organisation to manage your own caseload and deadlines

Desirable, not essential

  • Tribunal advocacy experience (we don’t expect this from a second-year trainee)

What you get

  • Pension Scheme
  • Bonus
  • Salary Extras: discounts and savings at several retailers
  • Hybrid working (on completion of induction training)
  • Buy or sell up to 3 days’ holiday each year
