An established specialist contractor operating within the data centre and critical infrastructure sector is looking to appoint a High Voltage Manager to take responsibility for HV electrical safety, governance and operational standards across the business. This role would suit an experienced Senior Authorised Person who has spent significant time working directly with HV systems and is now looking to move into a broader management position. Rather than being permanently embedded within one project carrying out switching duties, the role will provide oversight across multiple projects, ensuring that the company's HV activities are being planned, controlled and delivered safely and consistently.

Based from the company's Hertford office, the position will involve regular travel to projects across London and the wider South East, with involvement across live data centre environments, critical infrastructure upgrades and new-build projects.

The Role

The High Voltage Manager will act as the company's senior point of contact for matters relating to HV electrical safety and operational control. Responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing HV electrical safety standards across multiple projects
  • Managing and supporting the company's Senior Authorised Persons and Authorised Persons
  • Reviewing the competency and suitability of personnel undertaking HV duties
  • Supporting the appointment and authorisation of SAPs and APs
  • Reviewing switching schedules, isolation procedures and energisation strategies
  • Providing technical oversight for HV switching and commissioning activities
  • Ensuring projects operate in accordance with company electrical safety rules and client procedures
  • Reviewing RAMS, switching programmes, SOPs, MOPs and EOPs associated with HV activities
  • Supporting project teams during initial energisation and commissioning
  • Providing technical input where faults, abnormal operating conditions or complex isolations arise
  • Carrying out project audits and ensuring electrical safety procedures are being correctly implemented
  • Reviewing the performance and competency of specialist HV subcontractors
  • Supporting project teams during the planning of shutdowns, temporary supplies and electrical infrastructure upgrades
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to SAPs, APs and developing electrical personnel
  • Working with project, commissioning and engineering teams to ensure safe transition from construction through commissioning and into operation
  • Maintaining consistent HV standards across the business rather than allowing individual projects to develop their own working practices

The Person

The successful candidate is likely to have previously worked extensively as an SAP and will have a strong practical understanding of operating HV systems within data centres, critical infrastructure or similarly complex electrical environments. You should have experience across:

  • HV and LV electrical distribution systems
  • HV switchgear
  • Transformers
  • Generators
  • UPS systems
  • Protection and control systems
  • Switching and isolation procedures
  • HV commissioning and energisation
  • Electrical safety rules
  • Permit-to-work systems
  • SAP and AP competency requirements
  • Contractor and project team management

Previous experience within data centres would be particularly valuable due to the operational importance of the electrical infrastructure and the level of control required when undertaking shutdowns, switching and energisation activities. This is not simply an SAP position. The business is looking for someone capable of stepping above individual projects and taking ownership of how HV activities are managed across the organisation. You will therefore need to be technically strong, confident challenging unsafe or inappropriate practices and comfortable working with Project Managers, Commissioning Managers, electrical specialists, clients and senior management.

Location

The position will be based from Hertford, with travel required to data centre and critical infrastructure projects primarily across London and the South East.

Package

£80,000 – £100,000 basic salary, dependent on experience, plus company package.
