Job Summary: At HUAWEI UK R&D we design and develop a range of active and passive components in III-V semiconductors and on silicon photonics platforms. To expand our world leading design capability, we are looking for a software and simulation engineer with experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. The role will be working in the design team alongside our device design experts using a range of tools and techniques. This role will span from model building through full simulation automation and optimization. The role will require extensive knowledge of a range of machine learning techniques including multi-parameter optimization and inverse design. Automation of test data analysis and correlation to design variants is also necessary to re-calibrate and refine the models.
Key Responsibilities:
- Communicate with device design experts to understand simulation workflows and the goals and limitations to existing methods or tools.
- Implement machine learning techniques to automate these simulation needs.
- Ownership of software tools, maintain control and carry out improvement of this code and provide a user interface for device designers.
- Delivering literature review of state of the art and progress reports on the tools developed.
- Training of other design team members and providing documentation on use of the simulation tools.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Design, Fabrication, and Test departments to gather data and ensure experimental verification.
- Design experiments to assess the limitations of e.g. process tolerances by correlating initial models to experimental data and evolve physics aware models.

Required:
- A PhD in Computing Science, Physics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Deep knowledge and implementation of machine learning with examples of collaborative working.
- Exceptional skills in data analysis, along with outstanding presentation and communication abilities. Report writing enabling clear and impactful dissemination of complex information.
- Experienced in Python or similar programming languages for efficient simulation, automation and data analysis.
- Ability to build, document and deploy modelling and simulation tools.
- Ability to work independently, manage time and record allocation on multiple projects.

- A track record of publication and active participation in conferences, complemented by strong public speaking skills, reflecting an ability to share insights and results with the wider community.
