Your New Role

The Electrical Systems Engineer will report to the Electrical Engineering Manager and be responsible for investigating maintenance, reliability, and safety defects, developing engineering solutions, and ensuring contractual reliability targets are met. The role also involves design modification activities and obtaining customer or regulatory approvals for changes.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate maintenance, reliability and safety related defects raised by internal customers, ensuring compliance with stakeholder and UK legislative requirements.
  • Assist in developing documented engineering procedures, practices and policies.
  • Coordinate continuous improvement programmes to achieve contractual requirements.
  • Liaise with Hitachi and external personnel to complete duties of the post.
  • Provide detailed engineering analysis of complex issues, work towards containment, root cause analysis, and develop long‑term corrective actions.
  • Write clear, detailed technical reports on investigations and any recommendations.
  • Progress corrective actions through the Change Approval Process, preparing documentation and evidence for implementation on fleets.
  • Assist in creation or amendment of documents for maintenance and overhaul activities of electrical systems and/or components.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Follow and, where appropriate, assist in developing relevant procedures to ensure smooth progression of work.
  • Build strong working relationships with design engineering and manufacturing engineering teams.
  • Support learning and development within the Service and Maintenance team, including the development of new and Graduate Engineers.
  • Ensure adequate levels of Health, Safety and Environmental concerns are maintained in all aspects of work, in accordance with company policies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Engineering degree (BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc) in a relevant discipline or equivalent evidence of degree‑level knowledge.
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical systems, both technically and operationally.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, relevant standards, codes of practice, and design principles/practices; especially in UK rolling stock.
  • Proven experience delivering complex electrical solutions in a rolling stock environment.
  • Comfortable with hands‑on engineering for on‑train investigations when needed.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety requirements in a practical working environment.
