About the role

Wise is a global technology company building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money. As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money. For everyone, everywhere.

Join us as a Software Engineer in our critical Scam Prevention team. This is a high-impact engineering role with a strong product focus, dedicated to solving complex, real‑world adversarial problems to directly protect our global customer base.

The Scam Prevention team is on the front lines, dedicated to safeguarding our platform against sophisticated financial crime. We leverage cutting‑edge machine learning, real‑time transaction monitoring, and advanced data analysis to create robust controls and detection capabilities. Our vision is to build a globally scalable fraud prevention engine that protects customer accounts, prevents scams, and consistently surpasses regulatory expectations.

What will you be working on?

  • Building and refining critical controls to prevent Wise customers from scams.
  • Driving backend and frontend development for our scam prevention and detection systems – 80% of the time on backend and 20% on frontend.
  • Delivering a tangible, real‑world impact by securing customers' money, accelerating product growth by raising automation levels, and helping engineer a world‑class money transfer product.

What do you need?

  • Engineering expertise: Professional experience with Java or other JVM‑based languages, including the Spring framework. Experience building and designing scalable web applications that handle large amounts of traffic, ideally using React‑based frontend applications and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • System design & operation: Proven experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines, distributed, and concurrent systems.
  • Product ownership: A strong product mindset, accountability, and the ability to drive projects independently while making data‑driven decisions with the customer in mind.
  • Data proficiency: Experience with relational and non‑relational databases, including query optimisation and designing resilient schemas.
  • Code quality: Exceptional fundamentals, sharp problem‑solving ability, and a commitment to test‑driven development and best coding practices.
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts across teams (Product, Data Science, Investigations).

Nice To Have

  • Familiarity with the machine learning lifecycle (data pipelines, feature engineering, and deploying ML systems into production).

How to prepare for a job interview at hackajob

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned.
