The opportunity

GreenTec Workforce Solutions is supporting a growing UK high-voltage infrastructure and renewable energy delivery specialist in the appointment of an experienced Design Manager. The organisation delivers grid connections, HV and LV infrastructure, substations, Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the UK. This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of the design process across a varied portfolio of energy infrastructure projects, working closely with engineering, procurement, project management and construction teams.

The role

As Design Manager, you will oversee design delivery from project commencement through construction, completion and final handover. You will ensure that technical information is coordinated, reviewed and approved at the appropriate stage, enabling projects to be delivered safely, efficiently and in line with programme, quality and commercial requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage design programmes, deliverables, technical submissions, approval processes and document registers across allocated projects
  • Coordinate internal and external engineers, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors and specialist designers
  • Review electrical, civil and structural design information, identifying clashes, omissions, risks and buildability issues at an early stage
  • Manage technical queries, design changes and multidisciplinary interfaces throughout the project lifecycle
  • Work with project, construction and procurement teams to ensure specifications, equipment selections and supplier information align with the approved design and delivery programme
  • Coordinate technical assurance, CDM responsibilities, as-built information and final design documentation for project handover
  • Maintain effective design control in accordance with relevant quality, environmental and health and safety management standards
  • Identify and escalate design-related risks or delays while contributing to the continued improvement of design-management processes

About you

You will be an organised and technically capable design professional who can manage multiple projects and competing priorities. You should be comfortable reviewing complex engineering information, coordinating different disciplines and making informed decisions that support safe and practical construction. Strong communication, stakeholder management and commercial awareness will be essential, along with the ability to take ownership and work independently.

Experience and qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Design Manager, Design Lead, Senior Design Engineer or in a comparable position within energy, utilities, infrastructure, engineering or construction
  • Strong knowledge of design coordination, technical interfaces, construction methodology and buildability
  • Ability to review technical drawings, specifications, engineering information and design deliverables
  • Experience managing design programmes, approvals, external consultants and specialist designers
  • A relevant degree or technical qualification in electrical, civil or another engineering discipline; equivalent industry experience will also be considered
  • Willingness to travel to project sites, client meetings and other UK locations when required

Experience involving HV/LV infrastructure, substations, grid connections, ICP or EPC projects, Solar PV, BESS, protection and control systems, or DNO/IDNO requirements would be highly advantageous. Knowledge of CDM requirements, NEC or FIDIC contracts and experience engaging with National Grid or other network stakeholders would also be beneficial. Professional membership of an organisation such as the IET, ICE or CIBSE—and Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status—would be welcomed but is not essential.

What's on offer

  • Salary from £60,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • Performance-related bonus opportunity of up to two payments each year
  • 28 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Company pension scheme
  • Employee assistance, support and wellbeing benefits
  • Potential company vehicle or car allowance, subject to the overall package
  • Career-development opportunities within a growing energy infrastructure business
