Job Description

Build a legacy that flows for generations. Join Farrans on the Living Water Enterprise.

Are you ready to bring your expertise to one of the most ambitious infrastructure programs in UK water history?

Farrans Construction is a proud delivery partner of Living Water Enterprise (LWE)—a groundbreaking £3.6 billion capital investment program and secure 12-year pipeline of work dedicated to transforming the region’s water and wastewater networks.

This isn't just about moving muck and laying pipes. We are completely overhauling critical infrastructure, protecting local rivers, and pioneering low-carbon, nature-based engineering solutions.

The opportunity

Following the successful award of several significant infrastructure projects and with a strong pipeline of future opportunities, Farrans is seeking an Estimator to join our expanding Civil Engineering Pre-Contract team.

This growth reflects the continued success of our business across key sectors. As part of a busy and collaborative team, you'll play a key role in developing winning cost proposals for major civil engineering projects throughout the UK and Ireland.

The successful candidate will prepare detailed estimates, undertake cost analysis and support the delivery of high-quality tender submissions. You'll work closely with operational teams, clients and supply chain partners while benefiting from a supportive environment that actively promotes professional development and career progression.

Joining a team of experienced bid managers, estimators and bid writers, you'll help deliver bids on projects typically ranging from £10m to in excess of £50m, supporting Farrans' continued growth and success.

Responsibilities

What you'll be doing:

  • Working closely with our Bid Management team to plan and manage estimating activities, ensuring key milestones and submission deadlines are achieved.
  • Reviewing tender documentation and contract conditions to identify opportunities, risks, and key project requirements.
  • Engaging with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations and build robust cost estimates.
  • Visiting project sites and attending pre-construction meetings to develop a thorough understanding of project scope and delivery requirements.
  • Producing and developing Bills of Quantities from tender documentation, drawings, and specifications.
  • Building accurate and competitive estimates using industry-leading estimating software and first-principles methodologies.
  • Sourcing, analysing, and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations to ensure compliance with project specifications and commercial objectives.
  • Collaborating with design, engineering, and operational teams to develop comprehensive pricing solutions, including temporary works requirements.
  • Preparing and pricing project preliminaries, ensuring all aspects of project delivery are fully considered.
  • Leading tender adjudication processes, presenting estimates and supporting information to senior stakeholders.
  • Preparing high-quality tender submissions that are accurate, commercially sound, and aligned with client requirements.
  • Managing tender submissions through to completion, ensuring information is submitted correctly and within client deadlines.
  • Maintaining organised and auditable tender records, supporting future reference and lessons learned activities.
  • Communicating tender outcomes and key insights to senior management, contributing to continuous improvement across the business.

Qualifications

What we're looking for: We're looking for an experienced Estimator with a strong background in civil engineering and infrastructure. You'll bring:

  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
  • Proven estimating experience within the civil engineering or infrastructure sector
  • Strong understanding of construction projects across the UK and/or Ireland
  • Experience using estimating software such as Conquest, Candy or similar
  • Expertise in estimating, pricing and cost planning
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent numerical, analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • A detail-focused, organised approach with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Experience estimating major infrastructure, water, utilities, highways, renewable energy or civil engineering projects
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts
  • First-principles estimating experience
  • Ability to contribute to tender strategy and bid development.
