Principal Engineer - Electromechanical

Principal Engineer - Electromechanical

Full-Time On-site
EDGE Talent Consulting

Our client is building a new generation of autonomous systems designed around the realities of modern operations, rapid development, field relevance, affordability and the ability to manufacture at scale. Principal Engineer to take technical ownership of two electromechanical launch systems: one maturing product being re-engineered for repeatable production, and one new product in early development. These are electromagnetic and electromechanical machines - high-voltage power electronics, fast switching, embedded control, precision sensing and fast-moving mechanical assemblies that have to work together, safely, every time.

You will be the primary technical authority on both systems, reporting to the Head of Engineering, and you will be equally at home at a workbench, on the test floor and in a design review.

What you’ll do

  • Own the system architecture, specifications and engineering requirements for your projects.
  • Lead the development and integration of power electronics, electrical drives, control circuitry and protection.
  • Work with firmware engineers on closed-loop control, sensing, diagnostics, interlocks and safe operating sequences.
  • Work with mechanical engineers on alignment, loads, thermal effects, vibration and physical interfaces.
  • Write structured test plans, lead commissioning, find root causes with instrumentation and evidence, and turn findings into design improvements.
  • Guide the transition from prototype to robust, manufacturable, serviceable product - DFM, BOMs, specifications, supplier selection.
  • Direct and support internal engineers, contractors and external development partners.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong background in electronic or electrical engineering on complex electromechanical systems.
  • Demonstrable experience with power electronics, electrical control systems and embedded hardware.
  • Confident with electrical measurement, instrumentation and systematic fault diagnosis.
  • Working knowledge of embedded firmware and real-time control.
  • Sound practical mechanical understanding: assemblies, tolerances, loads, manufacturing processes.
  • A track record of leading technically complex development and making independent engineering decisions.

Useful but not essential

Electric drives and motion control; power conversion, energy storage and switching technologies; electromagnetic design and thermal management; DSPs and industrial comms; EMC, functional safety and compliance; aerospace, defence or robotics experience; taking a product from proof of concept to low-volume production.
