Role Purpose

The Continuous Water Supply Technician is responsible for the deployment, operation, maintenance, and management of continuous water supply solutions during planned works, unplanned interruptions, and emergency incidents across the water distribution network. The role plays a critical part in ensuring customers receive a safe and reliable drinking water supply while supporting network resilience, regulatory compliance, and customer service objectives.

Working as part of a dynamic operational team, the postholder will participate in an on-call rota, including standby duties, weekends, and occasional night work, responding rapidly to supply interruptions and emergency events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuous Water Supply Operations
    • Deploy, install, commission, and operate continuous water supply (CWS) equipment and pumping systems during planned and emergency events.
    • Assess sites prior to deployment and determine the most appropriate mitigation solution to maintain customer water supplies.
    • Provide on-site coordination including customer liaison, traffic management arrangements, land access requirements, and equipment deployment.
    • Support the delivery of supply interruption mitigation activities to meet customer service and regulatory performance targets.
  • Asset Maintenance and Equipment Management
    • Undertake inspection, maintenance, disinfection, sampling, testing, and exercising of operational equipment, including:
      • LGV water tanker fleet
      • Mobile bowsers
      • Mobile pumping facilities
      • Trailers and deployment units
      • Continuous Water Supply support vehicles
    • Maintain and repair supply interruption mitigation assets, including:
      • Hydrant cleansers
      • Portable flow meters
      • Portable pressure reducing valves (PRVs)
    • Ensure equipment remains operationally ready for deployment at all times.
  • Network Support Activities
    • Assist with wider water distribution network activities including:
      • Trunk main walking
      • Mains flushing operations
      • Leak detection
      • Valve operations
      • Reservoir inspection support activities
    • Support operational investigations relating to water supply interruptions and network incidents.
  • Water Quality and Compliance
    • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with water quality standards and contamination prevention procedures.
    • Recognise and respond appropriately to actual or suspected contamination incidents.
    • Adhere to all drinking water regulations, operational procedures, and company standards.
  • Emergency Response
    • Act as a first responder during supply interruption incidents, including "No Water" and "Loss of Supply" events.
    • Provide rapid deployment of emergency water supply solutions for domestic, commercial, and industrial customers.
    • Participate in standby and call-out rotas to ensure effective emergency response capability.
  • Contractor and Stakeholder Management
    • Supervise and coordinate third-party contractors delivering CWS activities on behalf of the organisation.
    • Build positive relationships with customers, local authorities, emergency services, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
    • Deliver excellent customer service while managing challenging customer-facing situations professionally and effectively.
  • Health, Safety and Security
    • Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental policies and procedures.
    • Deploy and manage traffic management and operational logging equipment.
    • Conduct site risk assessments and promote safe working practices at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, reactive operational environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Strong customer service focus with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage challenging customer interactions professionally.
  • Positive, proactive, and solution-focused approach.
  • Basic IT literacy including Microsoft Office applications and field-based software systems.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements in operational environments.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Experience deploying and maintaining Continuous Water Supply (CWS) and Alternative Water Supply (AWS) equipment.
  • Experience filling, operating, and driving water tankers.
  • Knowledge of small water pipe fittings and installations.
  • Understanding of:
    • Water network hydraulics
    • Pressure differentials
    • Pump operation
    • Discolouration risks within distribution systems
  • Experience within water distribution, utilities, or operational field services environments.

Qualifications and Certifications

Essential or Willingness to Obtain

  • Disinfection City & Guilds Certification
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Card
  • LGV Category C+E Licence
  • NRSWA - Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Desirable

  • Forklift Licence
  • HIAB Licence
  • Lifting Operations Qualification
