About the role
An exciting opportunity to join our growing in-house Electrical Design Team. Due to a significant uplift in secured work and future pipeline, we are expanding our Electrical (E&P) Design capability within our York office. With workload for the current financial year already ahead of annual targets and a strong opportunity pipeline for next financial year, we are investing in new talent to meet demand.
We are seeking an Assistant Design Engineer (Electrical) to support the delivery of high‑quality engineering design across a broad range of rail and infrastructure projects. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop your technical capability under the guidance of experienced engineers while contributing to nationally significant decarbonisation and EV infrastructure programmes.

About the Role
As an Assistant Design Engineer (Electrical), you will contribute to the development of electrical engineering solutions in line with project requirements for quality, safety, programme, and cost. Under the supervision of a Senior Design Engineer, you will:
- Provide input into engineering solutions using sound technical principles
- Support development of design philosophies and clear technical documentation
- Assist with surveys and site inspections across multiple project locations
- Produce calculations, sketches, reports, and risk assessments in accordance with standards and best practice
- Collaborate closely with the Senior and Principal Engineers to ensure projects meet technical and programme requirements
- Maintain accurate design deliverables, records, and project documentation
- Develop awareness of construction methodology, CDM, and Safe by Design principles
This is a development-focused role suited to individuals looking to build a strong foundation in rail electrical design, with structured guidance and extensive exposure to real-world projects.
Key Projects You Will Support
You will play an important role in delivering electrical design across a growing portfolio, including:
- EV Infrastructure & Decarbonisation Projects
- EV Charging – Design support for new depot and operational charging packages
- Major Decarbonisation Programmes
- PSP/DNO power supply pricing support
- Stations, Access and Civils Electrification Projects
- Electrical design support for Access‑for‑All and station upgrade opportunities
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- Degree (BEng/BSc) in a relevant Engineering discipline
- Strong problem‑solving, numeracy, and communication skills
- Willingness to learn, take initiative, and contribute to team-based engineering
- An interest in electrical, E&P, or rail‑related design
- Experience in a construction, infrastructure, or engineering environment
- Awareness of British Standards, engineering drawings, sustainability, and industry best practice
