Legal Counsel – Northern Cluster (UKIN)

Overview: The Counsel for the Northern Cluster (UK, Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Nordics) has primary responsibility for advice and counsel to the organization on all legal affairs within the region as well as certain designated business segments. The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel responsible for International Developed Markets. The role requires a high degree of professionalism and involves interactions with high-level business and functional leaders throughout Western Europe.

Critical Responsibilities

  • Advises the Company on corporate, commercial, M&A, regulatory, antitrust, public procurement, compliance, IP and other legal issues relating to the UKIN Cluster.
  • Advise the Company on legal/contractual rights and responsibilities for high-risk / profile contracts.
  • Proactively identify legal risks for highest risk / profile issues and develop/approve an action plan.
  • Keep abreast of all legal, legislative, and regulatory developments, apprise senior management in a timely manner and assure full compliance with new laws, regulations or policy matters.
  • Train the Company on legal topics and cascade training and information throughout the organization; act as strategic partner for the commercial teams to limit risk, identify opportunities and suggest/implement solutions for better practices regarding structure, systems, and delivery of services.
  • Establish strong relationships with internal and external constituents; responsible for relationships with key outside legal firms.
  • Collaborate within Legal, including Ethics and Compliance and Privacy, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of Legal resources.

Key Qualifications

  • Fluent in English; fluency in any other EMEA languages preferred.
  • Strong understanding of local laws and regulations of countries in the cluster.
  • Familiarity with regulations related to medical devices and pharmaceuticals; prior experience advising on MHRA matters strongly preferred.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to provide practical and commercially-focused legal advice.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide creative and innovative legal solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high level of initiative and proactivity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Education and Experience

  • Qualified lawyer with a degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent) and a postgraduate degree in Law (LL.M or equivalent).
  • Admitted to practice law in the UK.
  • At least 7 years of experience as a legal counsel or lawyer, preferably in a multinational company or law firm.
  • Presence in the UK office (Reading) at least 3 days per week.
