To set up, operate and maintain the Surface‑Mount Technology (SMT) production lines, ensuring efficient throughput, exceptional build quality and adhere to all safety and workmanship standards. The role supports new product introduction (NPI) and continuous improvement activities within the Assembly division.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Machine Setup & Operation – Load, operate and fine‑tune Mycronic pick‑and‑place machines to meet daily production schedules.
- Inspection & Quality Assurance – Run Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) and X‑ray inspection equipment; analyse results and take corrective actions.
- Line Maintenance – Perform routine preventive maintenance on SMT, AOI and X‑ray equipment; liaise with engineering for escalated issues.
- Troubleshooting – Diagnose placement, solder paste and reflow issues, implement corrective measures and document actions taken.
- Material Handling – Manage feeders, reels and component traceability using ERP/MES systems; ensure moisture‑sensitive devices follow IPC‑JEDEC standards.
- Process Improvement – Participate in Lean/6σ and 5S initiatives to enhance throughput, reduce defects and optimise change‑over times.
- Documentation – Maintain accurate production logs, test records and equipment maintenance histories.
- Collaboration – Work closely with Production Engineering, Quality and NPI teams to support new assemblies, ECOs and first‑article builds.
- Health & Safety – Adhere to ESD controls, risk assessments and all site safety policies.
Qualifications
- HNC/HND or equivalent in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or proven equivalent experience).
- IPC‑A‑610 certification (preferred) or willingness to obtain.
Skills
- Strong understanding of SMT assembly processes, reflow profiles and component packaging.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, BOMs and assembly drawings.
- Competent user of SMT software suites and AOI programming tools.
- Solid problem‑solving skills with an analytical mindset.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a cross‑functional team.
- Attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality workmanship.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ hands‑on SMT production experience.
- Operating and programming Mycronic pick‑and‑place machines preferred but not essential.
- Running and interpreting results from Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) systems.
- Using X‑ray inspection equipment for BGA/QFN and high‑density assemblies.
- Demonstrated track record of meeting production targets while maintaining quality standards.
- Experience in high‑mix/low‑to‑medium volume manufacturing environments is advantageous.
