About the team

We are on a mission to level-up the mobile app.

You will join our Mobile Platform team which looks after tech underpinning the app itself: from the app’s architecture, shared capabilities and libraries and experiences, as well as the build and analytics infrastructure.

The team plays an important role as thought leaders in the broader mobile community at Zopa, and is responsible for moving our tech forward in that space.

The company has the vision to become Britain’s best bank and have just launched the Zopa account which is a high touch, mass-market product.

The app is our most important touch point with the customer and it needs to be performant and delightful.

It is a pillar for the technical strategy at Zopa and this team will play a prominent role at the heart of that strategy.

The app is today built using React Native but increasingly we are leveraging native capabilities (Swift and Kotlin) to significantly overhaul the app experience.

A day in the life

  • You will report into the Head of Engineering of Mobile.
  • Managing the engineers in the Mobile Platform team and be responsible for motivating the team and holding the right bar on performance and drive quality across all stages of the SDLC.
  • This is a leadership role that requires a balance of technical acumen, project management skills, and a proven ability to deliver complex high profile strategic projects at scale.
  • Working closely with Principal Engineer in Mobile, as well as the entire mobile community, to execute the technical strategy for the mobile app itself and to improve how it is built, distributed and observed.
  • Communicating with stakeholders (technical and otherwise) and bring product teams closer together. Some of your stakeholders will be the most senior members of the business.

About you

  • Importantly, you are experienced leading mobile engineering teams and owning mobile applications.
  • You thrive in successfully executing high-profile, strategic projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Enjoy owning and solving problems and able to create structure out of ambiguity, think about problems holistically and can drive an agenda while juggling multiple demands.
  • Are passionate about creating impact through empowering others and believe in supportive and humble leadership.
  • You are self-driven, ambitious and outcome focused. You chart a path for others rather than follow one.
  • You stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in mobile to ensure our solutions remain cutting-edge.

You are passionate about technology and using it as a tool to provide great customer experiences.

You must be comfortable being accountable for the quality of the technology built by your teams.

  • You are empathetic with strong relationship building skills and can communicate clearly and succinctly across a broad range of stakeholders throughout the software development process, managing expectations as you go.

Added bonus

  • Have experience working in a regulated environment to ensure that customer interests are always prioritised.

How to prepare for a job interview at Zopa

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Zopa uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
