Job Description
One of my long term relationship contractor clients have identified the need of a full time Design Manager with steelwork experience. This may well suit a current Design Manager seeking a new challenge or a Senior Draughtsman looking to progress their career within the steelwork arena. With a healthy order book throughout this year into 2026, now is a good time to join a recognised Hampshire contractor.
Duties:
- Manage the day-to-day activities of the drawing office team (both internal & external).
- Ensure projects within the drawing/design office are running to programme.
- Ensure design programmes & progress reports are issued in a timely manner, as per contract requirements.
- Ensure all project preparation (programme, tender drawing review, specification review) are dealt with in good time.
- Ensure drawing office/design resource (internal & external) is suitably secured in good time & drawing office budgets are maintained regularly.
- Maintain good communication with management structure & Fabrication teams to ensure programme commitments are maintained.
- Ensure key decisions being made are in line with project requirements, for example; delivery quantities and specifications.
- Review critical works to ensure they are in line with the project specification and codes of practice.
- Monitor workload throughout your department and ensure this is closely monitored and managed.
- Manage shortfalls or excess resource in the best interests of the business.
- Have an overview on variations/NCR’s on projects and ensure these are communicated to the commercial department in good time and programmed sufficiently.
- Attend design meetings & project meetings when necessary.
- Report upstream regarding project progress on a regular basis and highlight issues at the earliest opportunity to protect business interests.
- Guide and assist in training younger members of the department (including any work experience) and ensure training requirements are met and support given.
- Provide general support and guidance throughout your team.
- Ensure Trimble Tekla software is managed – i.e. software updates, subscription renewals, general queries or issues.
- Maintain and keep our drawing office procedures up-to-date.
- Assist in keeping our ISO 19650 (BIM) accreditation up-to-date and making sure our (and the client’s) BIM procedures are being met.
Responsibilities:
- Build relationships with client project teams to ensure good lines of communication and working relationships are maintained.
- Ensure positivity and business ethics are pushed into the wider business teams.
- Assist with queries involving the estimating, commercial and site works departments.
- Ensure decisions being made throughout the department reflect the needs of the business from an ethical and commercial perspective.
- Deal with staff issues, ensuring that issues are dealt with promptly, in accordance with legislation and in the interests of the business.
- Attend internal management meetings and head drawing office/design departmental meetings.
- Manage your department holiday requests and general leave requirements.
