Job Description
Mechanical Engineers are a core component of the program team serving as the technical authority for mechanical design while working to deliver best in class product. Mechanical Engineers work closely with other Engineers, Program Managers, Machinists, Quality Engineers, external partners, and the customers to ensure Wilcox stays on the leading edge of technology and innovation while ensuring the team is delivering a product that our customer can trust his/her life with.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Interfaces directly with and receives design feedback from manufacturing engineers, machinists, and other key members of operations throughout the product development process.
- Supports the development of team members by providing constructive technical feedback.
- Demonstrates the ability to receive and act on constructive feedback.
- Mentors and trains junior and mid-level engineers, helping them develop technical skills and expertise in mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving.
- Fosters a collaborative environment, helping to raise the technical skill of the team.
- Demonstrates interpersonal tact when working with others.
- Leads initiatives aimed at enhancing product design, quality control, or manufacturing processes, working collaboratively with other departments to implement changes.
- Participates in the early stages of new projects, and helps to ensure projects meet business objectives, specifications, and regulations.
- Works closely with other departments and engineering disciplines, such as R&D, manufacturing, and supply chain, to align mechanical design with organizational goals.
- Understands that it is critical to act as a united team during external meetings and demonstrates that understanding.
- Leads small team of engineers, assigning tasks and overseeing work quality.
- Serves as technical expert in mechanical engineering.
- Supports mechanical engineering needs on existing products and development efforts.
- Assists in the preparation of prototypes, models, and specifications for mechanical systems and components.
- Performs detailed engineering calculations and simulations (stress, thermal, linear dynamics) to support the design process.
- Analyzes material properties, stresses, and loads to ensure designs meet reliability standards.
- Conducts hands-on testing in laboratory or field settings to evaluate the performance, durability, and functionality of mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and specifications.
- Identifies any design flaws during testing and helps refine solutions.
- Ensures manufacturability and cost-effectiveness in the mechanical design process.
- Maintains organized records of design changes, testing results, and engineering decisions for future reference and traceability.
- Identifies areas for improvement in mechanical design processes and contributes to the development and implementation of best practices.
- Assists in the preparation of project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks, ensuring efficient use of time and budget.
- Tracks project progress for mechanical engineering tasks, regularly prepares reports, and ensures that deadlines are met.
- Prepares mechanical engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, user manuals, and technical reports.
- Reviews new projects requiring mechanical design and supports technical content of bid & proposal efforts.
- Presents designs, results, and reports to senior level management and/or external parties.
- Stays up to date with the latest mechanical engineering trends, tools, and technologies, and incorporates them into the team’s design and development processes with management support.
- Performs other duties as directed.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing).
- 5+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficient in the use of SolidWorks to design complex systems.
- Ability to work on complex mechanical design projects with little to no supervision.
- Ability to conduct and interpret engineering analyses such as stress, thermal, and linear dynamics simulations.
- Demonstrated understanding of mechanical systems, materials, thermodynamics, and manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and testing.
- Efficiently self-manages tasks in a fast-paced environment for multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skill.
- Strong leadership and motivational skills to drive self and team to meet goals and objectives of programs.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to interact with customers, suppliers, and other external personnel.
- Must be able to maintain composure in dealing with executives, and staff, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations.
- Strong understanding of the product development process.
- Strong understanding of GD&T.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality work.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
Skills/Abilities:
- 7+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tools.
- Experience with military standards, specifically MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-810.
- Experience with laser systems, night vision/imaging systems, or target location systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally, for handling parts and prototypes.
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to perform physical tests and handle tools/equipment used for prototyping.
- Regular on-site attendance is a necessary function of this position.
