The opportunity

Our client is currently seeking a Principal Seismic Civil & Structural Engineer to join our growing Energy division. This is an exciting time to get involved as we support a major client’s UK nuclear fleet through significant transformation and collaborate with developers of next-generation small modular reactors. Our work spans areas including Licensing, New Build, Power, Life Extension, and Decommissioning, making our expertise highly sought after across the nuclear industry. Their aim is to advance new nuclear technologies while ensuring the safe operation of existing power stations—playing a key role in helping the UK meet its Net Zero carbon goals.

The role

As a Principal Civil and Structural Engineer, you will lead civil engineering activities, delivering complex engineering solutions within time, budget, and quality constraints on projects of varying sizes. This role will be based in Warrington, Bristol, Newcastle, or Gloucester.

Your duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Working within integrated multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-profile projects
  • Managing programmes and resources to meet deadlines and budgets
  • Taking ownership of technical challenges, developing strategies, and implementing solutions through stakeholder engagement
  • Delivering technical solutions via analysis and design
  • Producing and reviewing design deliverables such as assumption notes, technical specifications, and calculation notes
  • Collaborating with international SMR developers to pass the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s Generic Design Assessment process
  • Reviewing and justifying design decisions to the ONR
  • Fulfilling and owning CDM responsibilities
  • Supporting proposal preparations

You will have the following qualifications & experience:

  • MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Civil Engineering or a relevant field
  • Chartered status with relevant institutions (e.g., ICE or IStructE)
  • Ability to lead and collaborate within multi-disciplinary design teams
  • Experience in designing and constructing civil engineering solutions using American codes
  • SASSI 2000, ACS SASSI, SHAKE expertise
  • LS-DYNA expertise
  • Concrete design expertise (American Concrete Institute ACI 318, ACI 349)
  • Steel design expertise (American Institute of Steel Construction AISC 360, AISC 341, AISC N690)
  • Seismic analysis (ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ASCE 7)
  • Understanding of BIM environment design tools
  • Experience in heavy infrastructure projects within nuclear or regulated industries
  • Knowledge of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes is desirable

The setting for the role

Risks include working on a nuclear licensed site, involving nuclear fuel, radiation, chemicals, high voltage equipment, moving vehicles, flammable materials, high-pressure systems, steam, and high noise and vibration levels. A full site induction will be provided, and safety requirements must be adhered to at all times.
