About the team
The Eventing team, a core part of Zillow\’s Data Platform organization, delivers a unified, scalable eventing platform that empowers teams across the company to model, capture, and utilize events for both analytical and operational needs. By operating critical streaming technologies such as Kafka and Flink, enabling event schema and domain management through the Event Portal, and providing developer tooling and self-service onboarding, the team ensures event data is discoverable, reusable, and high quality. Their work enforces data contracts, supports compliance, and integrates event data with platforms like Databricks, enabling robust analytics, machine learning, and system orchestration-ultimately underpinning Zillow\’s event-driven architecture and enabling innovative, data-driven experiences at scale.

About the role
As the Senior Software Development Engineer, you will have the outstanding opportunity to work with a diverse group of talented software engineers in shaping the direction of our data initiatives and implementing strategies that align with Zillow Group\’s business objectives. You will be at the forefront of driving technological advancements that enhance our platform\’s functionality and user experience.
In this role, you will develop essential platform tools and governance processes that empower internal users. Your work will enable teams across the company to efficiently create and share data, driving key business outcomes. By collaborating with data engineering and platform teams and engaging a diverse range of stakeholders-from technical engineers to data scientists and product managers-you will play a vital role in enhancing our data capabilities and overall user experience.
As a member of this team, you will:
- Architect, design, build, implement and support data platform tools
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and analysts enabling them to use the data platform to deliver on mission-critical property data needs
- Identify opportunities to evangelize and support existing data processes
This role has been categorized as a Remote position. \”Remote\” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.
In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $158,200.00 – $252,800.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.
In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.
Who you are
- 5+ years software development experience using Python/Scala/Java and experience leading the design/implementation/optimization of config driven, scalable, reliable services and platforms/workflows/pipelines using Databricks, Airflow, Hive, Spark, Kafka, EMR, or equivalents.
- A degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or equivalent work experience
- Proficiency in developing and supporting services with cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
- Experience in developing scalable processes for supporting multiple user groups and teams.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and passionate about collaborating across organizational boundaries.
- Comfortable distilling informal customer requirements into problem definitions, resolving ambiguity and balancing challenging objectives.
- Excited about mentorship and coaching/onboarding/leading teammates.
- Databricks experience is a plus.
- Experience with Data Governance & Compliance (CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, SOX, etc) is a plus
