Overview of the role: We are seeking an experienced Facilities and Health & Safety Engineer to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations while managing critical facilities and utilities projects. This role involves providing technical support, overseeing facilities maintenance programs, and coordinating contractors in a R&D environment. The ideal candidate will combine strong engineering expertise with a commitment to fostering a safe and efficient workplace. This is a part-time contract position (2-3 days per week) with an expectation of long-term engagement.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Health & Safety
    • Provide technical support and guidance on Health & Safety matters to ensure site compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations;
    • Conduct weekly and monthly safety inspections across lab areas;
    • Support and prepare for the annual site-wide Health & Safety inspection for insurance compliance;
    • Assist in the creation and updating of risk assessments for laboratory procedures and site activities;
  • Facilities & Utilities Project Management
    • Manage and support facilities-related projects, including upgrades, installations, and alterations;
    • Oversee the execution of projects such as: Electrical installations, Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) alterations, Nitrogen supply enhancements, Process Chilled Water (PCW) system upgrades, Compressed air system improvements;
  • Maintenance & Contractor Management
    • Develop and manage preventative maintenance plans for laboratory and facility equipment;
    • Act as the site liaison for external contractors and vendors, ensuring adherence to safety and performance standards;
    • Monitor and manage HVAC systems including chillers and AHUs via the Building Management System (BMS);
    • Oversee and coordinate the safe disposal of hazardous waste and WEEE in line with regulatory requirements;
    • Deliver internal training on Electric Vehicle (EV) charging systems;
    • Conduct biannual ladder inspections and ensure compliance with work-at-height safety protocols;

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Proven experience in a Facilities Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, or similar role within a laboratory, manufacturing, or technical environment;
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001) and compliance standards;
  • Familiarity with facilities systems, including LEV, PCW, compressed air, nitrogen supply, and HVAC;
  • Proficiency in using Building Management Systems (BMS) for remote monitoring and diagnostics;
  • Demonstrated project coordination skills, including contractor management and budget oversight;
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a proactive, hands-on approach to challenges;

Qualifications:

  • Experience in a Facilities Engineering or Maintenance Engineering role within a technical, laboratory, or manufacturing environment;
  • Relevant qualifications or certifications in Engineering, Health & Safety, or Facilities Management (desirable);
  • Solid understanding of Health & Safety regulations and site compliance standards;
  • Familiarity with facilities systems such as LEV, PCW, compressed air, and nitrogen gas supply;
  • Competence in using Building Management Systems (BMS) for remote equipment monitoring;
  • Strong project coordination and contractor management skills;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive, hands-on approach;
