Title: Embedded Software Engineering Manager

Location:

United Kingdom, Whiteley, Hampshire, GB

DTC | A Codan Company develops advanced wireless communication technology used in some of the world's most demanding environments.

From software-defined radios and high-performance wireless networks to communications for defence, uncrewed systems, government and broadcast applications, our engineers work on complex products where software, electronics and RF come together.

We're looking for an Embedded Software Manager to lead our engineering team in Whiteley.

This would suit an experienced embedded software leader who enjoys developing people, improving how software is delivered and setting the technical direction for a team working on complex products.

What you'll be working on

You'll manage an established high performing team of Engineers.

Your focus will be on leadership, technical oversight and improving the team's effectiveness. With a substantial team to manage, day-to-day coding will be limited, but you'll need the technical background to contribute to code reviews, understand engineering challenges and support sound design decisions.

Your work will include:

  • Leading, supporting and developing the team, identifying skills gaps and helping engineers build their expertise
  • Overseeing software and firmware delivery across multiple projects, balancing priorities, resources, quality and release schedules
  • Improving the software development lifecycle, introducing practical processes and modern engineering practices
  • Contributing to code and design reviews, maintaining standards for software quality, architecture and maintainability
  • Helping shape the team's technical vision and technology roadmap
  • Exploring how AI tools can support code development and testing
  • Working closely with project managers, technical leads and other engineering disciplines to resolve problems and coordinate delivery
  • Supporting the transfer of new designs into production alongside manufacturing engineering

You'll bring an informed view of how modern software teams operate and the confidence to introduce improvements. Just as importantly, you'll create a positive working environment where engineers feel supported, understand expectations and can do their best work.

What we're looking for

We're interested in someone who combines a strong embedded software background with effective people management and clear technical judgement.

You'll have:

  • Proven experience leading and managing engineering teams
  • A strong background in embedded software development using C/C++
  • Experience with embedded Linux and driver development
  • A good understanding of software architecture, design reviews and the software development lifecycle
  • Experience developing engineers and improving team capability
  • The ability to manage competing priorities across several projects
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to challenge constructively, make decisions and follow through

You might already be working as an Embedded Software Manager, Software Engineering Manager or an experienced Engineering Team Lead with substantial people management responsibility.

You'll need to be comfortable discussing technical detail with experienced engineers while keeping sight of team development and the wider delivery priorities.

Useful, but not essential

Experience or exposure in any of the following would be useful:

  • Managing teams spanning embedded software, FPGA or DSP development
  • System-on-Chip platforms
  • FPGA/VHDL development and ModelSim simulation
  • Digital signal processing
  • Rust
  • Electronic design processes and laboratory debug equipment
  • RF technology or digital video standards
  • Jira
  • Introducing AI tools into software development and testing

You don't need to be an expert in every discipline the team covers. A strong embedded software foundation, sound technical judgement and the ability to lead specialists are what matter.

Why DTC?

You'll lead work on sophisticated wireless products combining embedded software, electronics, RF and signal processing.

Real products, real impact

The software your team develops runs on physical communication systems used across defence, government, uncrewed platforms and broadcast applications around the world.

Work alongside specialists

Our multidisciplinary engineering teams include embedded software, RF, electronics and signal-processing expertise, giving you the opportunity to work closely with specialists across disciplines.

Shape the team and its future

You'll have the opportunity to develop engineers, improve software engineering practices and influence the technology roadmap for our embedded products.

  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Company pension with matching up to 9%
  • Company bonus scheme
  • Flexible core working hours
  • Annual pay reviews
  • Personal training and development
  • Income protection
  • Life assurance
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Modern working environment in Whiteley

You'll also be joining a global organisation with engineering and technology teams across the UK, USA, Denmark, Singapore, Dubai and Australia.

Security Clearance

Due to the nature of some of our work, successful applicants will need to be willing and eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance.

Some UK and international travel will be required.

Interested?

If you enjoy leading embedded engineering teams, developing people and improving how complex software is delivered, we'd like to hear from you.
