We have an exciting opportunity for a band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Acute Neuroscience / Major Trauma / Critical Care SLT inpatient team at Nottingham University Hospitals, to cover a maternity leave. The post will allow the post holder to develop and consolidate specialist knowledge and skills working with this varied client group. There will be opportunities to develop leadership skills and become involved in projects, as well as opportunities to develop advanced skills in communication and dysphagia management with highly complex patients drawing on information from instrumental assessments.
We are a friendly and supportive team with a high level of clinical expertise. You will be well supported by band 7 SLTs and the Clinical Specialist SLT. Excellent interdisciplinary working with the therapies team and wider MDT facilitates the delivery of care, and there are opportunities to get involved in projects, task and finish groups within the SLT service, and to deliver training. This is a fixed‑term full‑time post until the end of December 2026, covering a maternity leave in this team and is not part of the rotation programme.
Role Purpose
To provide a high‑quality Speech and Language Therapy service at Nottingham University Hospital Trust in a wide variety of settings.
Role Context
The role requires clinical and professional expertise so that those with speech, language, and communication needs and/or dysphagia needs benefit from a well‑coordinated, pro‑active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service within the designated specialism/setting. Representation of the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums is also required.
Responsibilities
Independently manage, triage and prioritise own caseload, providing specialist SLT assessment, formulation, diagnosis, intervention and advice based on evidence‑based practice for people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties, their families, carers, support staff and professionals. Develop and deliver training, and supervise and support band 5 and assistant Speech & Language Therapists.
Qualifications
Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
HCPC registration
Registered member of RCSLT
Completed RCSLT NQT competencies and, if relevant, Dysphagia competencies

Nottingham University Hospital Trust is a large teaching hospital with multiple sites, including the Queens Medical Centre, City Hospital and the newly opened National Rehabilitation Centre. The Speech & Language Therapist Service works across all sites, alongside a separate ENT SLT service, covering a very broad range of acute specialisms for adults and children. NUH hosts a number of regional services including the Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Trent Cardiac Centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. SLTs also work within Neuro‑rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient teams.
