Adult Critical Care are looking to employ a motivated and conscientious experienced nurse to join our multi-professional team caring for critically ill patients and their families. You will have broad experience and insight into caring for acutely unwell patients and their families. You will have the ability to lead a team, prioritise and respond to planned and unplanned situations and ensure the smooth and efficient running of the unit. Successful candidates will be expected to work across site as needed and to work both days and night shifts, including cross site rotation. You must lead the team in developing critical care by promoting excellence and innovative thinking. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work under pressure in a stressful environment with complex situations are essential.

  • If you have not completed the Critical Care Course you will still be considered for short listing; however, the expectation is that you will undertake the course within the first year in post.

Job Description & Responsibilities:

The post holder will act as deputy to the Unit Sister/Charge Nurse. He/she will be required to:

  • Act as the deputy to the Unit Sister/Charge Nurse, regularly taking charge of the Unit and ensuring standards and quality of care, together with the environment, are maintained to a high standard.
  • Be an effective leader and role model; provide direct clinical care and use experience to support clinical and nonclinical governance.
  • Work flexibly as a member of the Unit team and support the Unit Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure standards are maintained, evaluated, and improved where necessary.

Training and Qualifications:

  • Degree in health/nursing related studies or equivalent
  • Current NMC registration (level one)
  • Relevant post-basic diploma in Critical Care
  • Specialist Pathway Mentoring Course (NMC)

Desirable:

  • Formal leadership and management training/course

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years at Band 5 in acute setting, 2 years in critical care
  • Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration, and post-basic students
  • Ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively
  • Evidence of leadership, management and time management skills

Communication and Relationship:

  • Essential: Effective written and verbal communication, computer literacy; ability to minimise conflict
  • Desirable: Negotiation and influencing skills; formal teaching experience

Analytical and Judgement Skills:

  • Essential: Ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care; respond to problems with effective interventions
  • Desirable: Knowledge of NHS policy issues and data collection/analysis

Planning/Organisation:

  • Essential: Ability to prioritise own workload and respond to urgent/emergency situations; contribute to local objectives and action plans
  • Desirable: Leadership skills to lead a team and manage workload across the team
