Job Summary

Provide managerial, professional and clinical leadership within the neonatal service, supporting nursing staff and collaborating with allied health professionals to deliver excellent care for babies and families across both Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and City Hospital campuses.

Main Duties

  • 24‑hour responsibility for the management and delivery of neonatal care across the service.
  • Deputise for the Ward Manager, Critical Care Sister and Quality Sister when required.
  • Managing staff and budgets to maintain and improve standards of care.
  • Develop and implement patient‑care policies, clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Evaluate patient processes and redesign care pathways in partnership with multi‑professional teams.
  • Lead training needs analysis, contribute to the neonatal and children’s training plan, and mentor junior staff.
  • Ensure evidence‑based high‑quality care is delivered and recognise common issues to create actionable improvement plans.
  • Represent the service in quality and patient safety work, liaising with external agencies and other hospitals.

About The Service

The neonatal unit recently expanded with 21 new cots, bringing the total at QMC to 38. The service is a regional hub in the East Midlands, delivering complex medical and surgical intensive care for extremely premature and very sick infants. It is accredited as the first Children’s Hospital in Europe to receive the Pathway to Excellence mark and is proud of its Bliss Baby Charter accreditation.

Person Specification – Essential

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse, current NMC Registration.
  • Possession of a degree in nursing or healthcare.
  • Completion of a Neonatal Critical Care Course and current NLS provider.
  • Teaching or mentoring qualification and successful completion of a maths test.
  • Evidence of continued professional development and a recognised neonatal critical care qualification.
  • Management/leadership experience in a neonatal intensive care area.
  • Ability to manage staff, provide feedback, conduct risk assessment and lead change initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Analytical and judgement ability to prioritise complex problems, utilise data, and generate reports.
  • Strong planning and organisation skills, project management experience, and commitment to personal and team development.
  • Physical capacity to perform all nursing duties, including manual handling and use of medical equipment.
  • IT proficiency using keyboard, mouse and visual displays.
