Clinical Psychologists or Trainee Clinical Psychologists due to qualify in 2025 with an interest in clinical health psychology and the psychological impact of physical trauma/injuries and living with a visible difference are invited to apply to this well-established post within the regional burns service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust on a fixed-term basis for 9 months to cover maternity leave. The postholder will work with adult burns patients (0.4 WTE) and children and their families who have experienced burn injuries (0.3 WTE). The work involves both inpatient and outpatient working, supporting patients and their families during hospital admission as well as throughout their journey following discharge from hospital. The postholder will work with a variety of clinical presentations including acute emotional reactions, adjustment difficulties, anxiety associated with hospitalisation and surgery, parental distress, post-traumatic stress disorder, appearance-related concerns / distress related to scars, low mood, difficulties managing pain and difficulties engaging in physical rehabilitation.

The postholder will provide highly specialist psychological assessments and interventions to adults, children and their families under the care of the burns service. They will offer advice, consultation and teaching/training, and share psychological formulations, to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non professional carers. They will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures. They will utilise audit, service development and research skills within the service. They will provide clinical and professional supervision to assistant psychologists and trainees undertaking doctoral training, as required.

The postholder will join the Department of Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology, which is a growing and welcoming department within the Trust. The postholder will join the burns multidisciplinary team comprising plastic surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians where clinical psychology is well embedded and respected. The postholder will work closely with a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who leads the burns clinical psychology service and an Assistant Psychologist.

  • Working closely with the multidisciplinary burns team to offer psychological care to children and adults, and their families, under the care of the burns service
  • Working with children and young people and their families, as well as adults, through consultation with staff, direct work and attending multidisciplinary clinics/meetings
  • Providing highly specialist psychological assessment and therapy/input, offering advice and consultation to the MDT, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures
  • Utilising research skills for audit, policy and service development and research
  • Providing clinical and professional supervision to trainees undertaking doctoral training, where appropriate
  • Undertaking service development, where required
  • Delivering informal and formal teaching and training as required to the MD
