Successfully “rewiring the economy” requires the ability to understand the complexity of interactions in different parts of this system and identify the incentives and/or barriers for organisations and individuals to act in a way that supports a more circular economy. This role will be critical to achieving this, utilising behaviour change and systems thinking expertise to support the practical application of the groundbreaking Scotland’s Circular Economy Practices Ecosystem report.

With the potential to work across a range of delivery projects, supporting sector and subject matter specialists, this role will help identify points of greatest influence and utilise behaviour change frameworks, such as COM-B or ISM, to help design interventions to successfully target these. This could include for example, supporting the process for developing sector or place specific roadmaps, which are 5-year plans, informed by behavioural system mapping, to identify key interventions to “rewire” those sectors.

Working closely with and being directed by the Manager this role will develop, plan, deliver, monitor, report and grow behavioural systems mapping activities. As a key contact in this specialist area, the role will be specifically responsible for managing stakeholder engagement by clearly articulating the benefits of a systems approach, supporting participation in behavioural systems mapping and identification of key activities that would influence organisational behaviours to support adoption of circular economy practices. providing expert advice and support to key stakeholders and, inputting into the development of key specialist activities.

We want you if;

  • Educated to degree level in Behavioural Science, Systems Thinking or equivalent and/or relevant professional qualification in behavioural science / change.
  • If no relevant degree/professional qualification, then must be able to demonstrate relevant specialist experience and an ability to transfer that knowledge to others.
  • Member (or working towards membership) of behavioural science organisation e.g. UK-SBA
  • Evidence of experience developing an effective behaviour change intervention.
  • Demonstrable experience of stakeholder/customer/partner engagement by sharing technical knowledge.
  • Strong industry, market and technical understanding of specialist area’s.
  • Awareness of environmental drivers and issues in the sector.
  • Strong organisational skills with experience of developing and implementing project plans successfully.
  • Excellent track record of managing delivery and achieving outcome-based targets in similar specialist area.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrable experience of influencing decision makers and, presenting to relevant sector to deliver outcome-based targets.
  • Strong interdisciplinary and team working skills.
  • Experience of managing contracts and external contractors to deliver services.
  • Strong level of computer literacy including MS Office.

What you\’ll be doing;

  • Working closely with the wider Circular Economy (CE) Delivery Directorate to support the delivery of current Zero Waste Scotland outcome targets and business plan.
  • Lead the work to deliver behavioural systems mapping for specific products, sectors and places as required, identifying the primary barriers and/or lack of incentives to adoption of Circular Economy Practices
  • Application of COM-B or ISM behaviour change frameworks to support identification and implementation of interventions that will target those barriers and/or lack of incentives to increase the adoption of circular economy practices
  • Support the ongoing work to develop networks and relationships across Scotland and internationally; to leverage leading insights in behaviour change and systems thinking and apply these to the Circular Economy
  • Support the upskilling of colleagues across the organisation and the embedding of systems thinking across organisational planning and delivery
  • Engage external stakeholders, articulating the benefits of a systems thinking approach, secure commitment to participate in systems mapping activities and the development of interventions designed using behaviour change expertise.
  • Understand relevant current and future legislative and policy drivers in Scotland and to help facilitate development of any future team activity.
  • Work with partners to develop a pipeline of projects from across the sector in Scotland.
  • Contribute to disseminating the results and outputs from Zero Waste Scotland and commissioned studies by speaking at external events and by facilitating and presenting at Zero Waste Scotland organised dissemination events and workshops.
  • Diagnose and identify opportunities to enhance the delivery of Zero Waste Scotland’s services and work in partnership with the business investment team and Manager to examine this; embedding systems thinking and behaviour change in all projects will be a major facet of this role
  • Support the Manager in defining processes which are relevant to delivery of specific programmes of work and manage delivery within agreed processes including the identification and management of sector/technical specialist area risks (escalating any major stakeholder risks).
  • Provide expert technical and professional advice, guidance and support to colleagues, customers, providers, suppliers and / or other stakeholders.
  • Interpret and resolve complex queries and issues and offer tailored solutions which meet their needs.
  • Support the Manager in setting and implementing monitoring and evaluation requirements across projects, and input monitoring information to Zero Waste Scotland’s reporting processes, sharing it with the Manager and other colleagues as requested.

For us, work isn’t a place we go, but a thing we do so we fully embrace flexibility and encourage you to choose home working where the role allows. While this role is home-based there may be the requirement for some travel to/within Scotland. There willbe times when you arerequired to attend our Stirling office or a client location (normally within the Central Belt of Scotland) therefore to allow for ease of travel, applicants should live within Scotland or North of England. The office is located next to the railway station and is conveniently accessed from across central Scotland.
