About the Role
We are looking for a detail-driven Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join a lean, high-performing People Operations team. Reporting to the Payroll Lead, you will own the day-to-day execution of payroll across the UK and additional European countries — ensuring every employee is paid accurately and on time, every cycle. This is a role for someone who thrives in ambiguity, takes full ownership of their work, and does not need hand-holding to deliver. You will operate autonomously within a remote-first, fintech environment and be expected to bring structured thinking, regulatory knowledge, and a continuous-improvement mindset to everything you do.
What to Expect
- Process accurate, timely payrolls for UK and European employees across multiple pay cycles and jurisdictions.
- Manage all payroll events end-to-end: new starter onboarding, leavers, salary changes, promotions, and benefit deductions.
- Act as the first point of contact for payroll queries from employees and internal stakeholders, resolving issues promptly and professionally.
- Ensure correct integration between payroll, HR, and finance platforms — flagging data gaps proactively.
- Support the existing payroll team to resolve issues and answer queries from the employee population.
Reporting & Reconciliation
- Produce payroll journals and reports for Accounting and Treasury on schedule.
- Reconcile payroll data each cycle, investigating and resolving discrepancies before sign-off.
- Ensure payroll accounts are funded accurately and on time, in line with internal financial controls.
Regulatory Compliance
- Complete all statutory filings and regulatory submissions across UK and European payrolls (e.g. RTI, P60s, country-specific social security filings) in conjunction with our payroll processor.
- Stay current on payroll legislation changes across relevant jurisdictions — particularly where they intersect with financial services regulation.
- Maintain accurate payroll records in line with data retention policies and security standards.
Controls & Governance
- Follow and help maintain payroll policies and procedures, flagging gaps or risks to the Payroll Lead and Head of People Operations.
- Support internal and external payroll audits, providing accurate records and clear documentation.
- Apply strong data hygiene and access controls in line with our financial security standards.
Process Improvement
- Identify recurring issues or inefficiencies in existing payroll workflows and propose practical solutions.
- Support automation and tooling initiatives to reduce manual effort and increase accuracy.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement — raising problems with solutions, not just flags.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Proven experience processing UK payroll end-to-end, including statutory compliance (RTI, auto-enrolment, statutory payments).
- Hands-on experience with at least one additional European payroll jurisdiction (e.g. France, Germany, Belgium).
- Confident working remotely and autonomously — manage deadlines and proactively communicate blockers.
- Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy; you check your own work before submitting.
- Experience in a fintech, financial services, or mature scale-up environment.
- Comfortable with ambiguity — you can operate in environments where processes are still being built.
Desirable
- CIPP qualification or working towards it.
- Experience with cloud-based payroll or HRIS platforms (e.g. HiBob, Deel).
- Exposure to multi-currency payroll or cross-border employment arrangements.
- Experience supporting or preparing for payroll audits.
Our global team of 800+ people is spread across six continents. We aspire to hire the best mix of people from former Olympians to YouTube influencers and we speak over twenty languages. This incredible diversity isn't a bonus; it's the engine that lets us serve the world.
