The Management Accountant plays a key role in overseeing the day-to-day finance function and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timely delivery of financial information across the business. This position is responsible for producing insightful management reporting, maintaining robust financial records, and supporting the organisation's financial planning and control processes. Working closely with colleagues across multiple departments, the role provides financial analysis to support informed decision-making, monitors business performance against budgets and targets, and helps drive operational improvements through effective financial management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Management Reporting: Produce accurate monthly management accounts, ensuring financial results are delivered on time and accompanied by meaningful commentary on business performance, trends, and key variances.
  • Financial Analysis: Prepare Profit & Loss reports and other financial information to provide senior management with the insight required to support commercial and operational decision-making.
  • Accounting & Financial Control: Maintain accurate accounting records, overseeing bookkeeping activities including reconciliations, VAT submissions, credit control, and ensuring compliance with relevant financial legislation and accounting standards.
  • Invoice Processing: Manage the end-to-end processing of sales and purchase invoices, monitor finance inboxes, and ensure all banking and credit card transactions are recorded accurately and promptly.
  • Finance Administration: Provide day-to-day support across the finance function, assisting with additional accounting and administrative activities as business requirements evolve.
  • Financial Policies & Procedures: Support the development, review, and maintenance of finance policies, procedures, and process documentation to strengthen governance and ensure consistent ways of working.
  • Business Performance Reporting: Develop and present financial and operational reports that monitor business performance, identify trends, and support continuous improvement initiatives across the organisation.
  • Process Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to improve financial systems, streamline workflows, and enhance efficiency across both finance and wider business operations.
  • Managing Director Support: Deliver financial analysis, reporting, research, and project-based support to the Managing Director, providing timely information to assist with strategic and operational priorities.
  • Business Partnering: Collaborate with colleagues across multiple departments to support budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and the achievement of wider business objectives.
  • MRI Financial Administration: Maintain accurate financial records within the MRI system, including processing site-specific transactions, managing resident invoicing, producing annual budgets, monitoring debt recovery, responding to billing enquiries, preparing year-end accounts, and completing variance analysis.
  • Payroll Coordination: Manage payroll administration to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time, while maintaining compliance with statutory obligations and internal controls.
  • Board Reporting: Consolidate departmental reports into a comprehensive management pack for Board review, ensuring information is accurate, consistent, and professionally presented.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a Management Accountant, Assistant Management Accountant, or similar finance role.
  • Strong understanding of management accounting principles, month-end processes, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret management accounts, Profit & Loss statements, balance sheets, and cashflow reports.
  • Experience of budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and performance reporting.
  • Excellent bookkeeping knowledge, including reconciliations, VAT returns, credit control, and purchase and sales ledger management.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (experience with MRI and/or Xero would be advantageous).
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to analyse financial data and produce meaningful reports.
  • Knowledge of payroll administration and statutory compliance.
  • Experience preparing financial information for senior management and board-level reporting.
  • Ability to develop, review, and improve financial processes, controls, and procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the business.
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to interpret financial data and provide practical recommendations.
  • Experience supporting audits and working with external accountants or auditors is desirable.
  • AAT, CIMA, ACCA, ACA, or equivalent accounting qualification (or working towards one) is desirable but not essential, depending on experience.
