As we continue to scale, we are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Buyer - BOS & Civils to support the delivery of our renewable energy portfolio through effective procurement of balance of system, civil works and associated infrastructure packages.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Head of Commercial & Procurement, the Senior Buyer - BOS & Civils will be responsible for managing procurement activities across key balance of system and civils packages for utility-scale renewable energy projects. This role will support project delivery by sourcing, tendering, negotiating and placing contracts for civil, electrical and infrastructure-related works and materials. The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering, Construction, Development, Commercial and Legal teams to ensure procurement activities are aligned with programme, budget, quality and risk objectives.
The role requires a commercially aware procurement professional with experience in renewables, infrastructure, utilities or major construction projects, and familiarity with supplier markets relevant to solar PV, BESS, substations and associated civils and balance of plant scopes.
Key Responsibilities
- Procurement Delivery
- Manage procurement activities for BOS and civils packages across utility-scale solar PV, BESS and associated grid infrastructure projects.
- Run end-to-end sourcing processes including market engagement, pre-qualification, tender issue, bid evaluation, negotiation, recommendation and contract award.
- Procure key packages and materials including civils works, drainage, access roads, fencing, piling, cabling, trenching, substations, switchgear, transformers, balance of plant infrastructure and related services.
- Implement procurement strategies and sourcing plans in line with project delivery milestones, budget targets and technical requirements.
- Work with internal stakeholders to prepare clear scopes of work, tender documentation, pricing schedules and bid assessment criteria.
- Drive value through robust tendering, supplier engagement and commercial negotiation.
- Supplier & Market Management
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with contractors, subcontractors, distributors and equipment suppliers relevant to BOS and civils procurement.
- Monitor supplier performance, market capacity, pricing trends, lead times and supply chain risks across relevant categories.
- Support the development of framework agreements, preferred supplier arrangements and strategic sourcing initiatives.
- Support supplier due diligence activities including commercial evaluation, financial review, capability assessment and compliance checks.
- Provide market intelligence and procurement insight to support budgeting, project planning and internal decision-making.
- Commercial & Contract Support
- Support the Head of Commercial & Procurement in commercial negotiations and contract placement for major project packages.
- Review commercial terms and participate in the negotiation of subcontract agreements, purchase orders, framework agreements and supply contracts.
- Ensure procurement recommendations appropriately consider cost, programme, quality, technical compliance and risk allocation.
- Work closely with Legal and Commercial teams to support contract finalisation and maintain contractual protections in line with company requirements.
- Assist with supplier claims, commercial clarifications, variations and post-award procurement matters where required.
- Internal Collaboration & Governance
- Collaborate with Engineering, Construction, Project Management, Finance and Legal teams to ensure procurement activities support efficient project execution.
- Maintain accurate procurement records, sourcing documentation, tender returns, bid evaluations and award recommendations.
- Ensure procurement activity is undertaken in accordance with internal governance, delegated authority requirements and audit standards.
- Support reporting on procurement status, committed spend, savings opportunities, supplier risk and package award progress.
- Promote consistent procurement processes, transparency and commercial discipline across project teams.
- Sustainability, Compliance & Risk
- Ensure procurement activities align with company sustainability objectives, ESG standards and Modern Slavery obligations.
- Identify and escalate procurement and supply chain risks including capacity constraints, pricing volatility, quality concerns and programme impacts.
- Support ethical sourcing and supplier compliance requirements across the procurement lifecycle.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of procurement tools, templates, systems and governance processes.
Requirements
Essential
- Strong experience in procurement, buying or supply chain roles within renewable energy, utilities, infrastructure, construction or related sectors.
- Demonstrable experience procuring BOS, civils, balance of plant or infrastructure packages for utility-scale energy or major construction projects.
- Experience managing competitive tender processes and negotiating with contractors, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Good understanding of commercial terms, contract structures and procurement risk management.
- Experience working with cross-functional project teams including engineering, construction, commercial and legal stakeholders.
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance cost, quality, programme and risk considerations.
- Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple packages and competing priorities.
- Proficient in procurement reporting, bid analysis and supplier evaluation.
- Degree qualified in Supply Chain, Procurement, Quantity Surveying, Engineering, Business, Construction Management or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
Desirable
- Experience in solar PV, BESS, onshore wind or grid infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of UK contractor and supplier markets relevant to civils, substations, cabling and balance of plant works.
- Familiarity with EPC, subcontract and framework agreement structures.
- MCIPS or working towards a professional procurement qualification.
- Experience within an IPP, Developer, EPC Contractor, Utility, ICP or major infrastructure organisation.
- Understanding of UK grid connection-related infrastructure and associated procurement requirements.
