Our first focus is to develop and scale technology that measures and mitigates methane emissions in the livestock industry.
As Field Application Engineer within ZELP, you will play a fundamental role in directly influencing the development of ZELP's emissions measurement technology, by supporting field trials and working closely with our passionate engineering teams to help drive improvements through real-world feedback from on cow testing. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys getting hands-on with hardware, and communicates well with cross-functional teams. You'll be the key link between our lab, engineering, and field deployments.
Remote working: On-site primarily away from the office, up to 5 remote working days p/annum.
Responsibilities:
- Support field trials of our Sense (methane measurement) devices from a technical perspective (primary role).
- Seamlessly interface with animal scientists, farm staff as well as engineers.
- Primarily based at field trial locations both within and out of the UK.
- Actively contribute to successful device trials, which is crucial in our publication of academically rigorous research papers demonstrating the device's function to our customers.
- Lead the maintenance of devices to ensure optimal performance in trials and customer demonstrations.
- Identify potential failure modes from first hand field observations.
- Troubleshoot areas for improvement with the mechanical, electronic and software systems in the field e.g. fatigued connectors, loss of sensor data, part wear.
- Document trial outcomes & field insights into clear, actionable feedback to inform and direct future design iterations.
- Assist with the organisation and preparation of field trials.
- Conduct detailed pre-field lab based validation testing.
- Contribute to hands-on assembly of small batches of devices.
Required experience:
- Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Biomedical, or related Engineering discipline.
- Over 1 years of relevant work experience.
- This position is best suited for candidates with entry-level to mid-level experience, ranging up to 8 years.
- Experience conducting on-site technical hardware based validation testing.
- Strong hands-on skills: able to confidently assemble, test, and modify electromechanical devices.
- Basic experience working with electronic systems.
- Driving licence and willingness to travel to field sites (sometimes at short notice).
Candidate will preferably have exposure to:
- Ruggedised device design including; robustness testing, strain relief, connectors, waterproofing etc.
- Practical prototyping and 3D printing.
- Designing and conducting validation testing.
- Basic 2D drawings and 3D CAD Modelling.
- Low volume/prototype manufacturing and assembly processes i.e. 3D printing, laser cutting, sheet metalwork, fasteners, etc.
- Working in cross-functional teams.
- Experience working with animals e.g. animal research, vet tech, or bioengineering.
