Role Description
As our Backend Engineering Lead, you will be responsible for a wide range of critical backend systems, including our Payment Gateway, Settlement, Transaction Fraud Monitoring, Datalake Service, and Core Banking System. You'll oversee their development, deployment, and ongoing enhancements, while also ensuring their reliability, performance, and stability in production. This hybrid role requires a unique blend of software engineering and a deep Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) mindset. You’ll use your expertise in software, systems, and cloud engineering to tackle complex production challenges, drive automation, and ensure our services are both innovative and exceptionally dependable. To excel in this role, you should be a people-oriented leader who is easy to work with, adaptable, and flexible, all while maintaining high standards. You will have extensive experience in software engineering, DevOps, project management, incident management, and team and stakeholder management. You'll also be comfortable managing a mix of direct reports and shared teams, and will be supported by our global teams of engineers, QAs, SREs, and DevOps professionals.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the end-to-end development, enhancement, and agile deployment of all UK backend systems.
- Collaborate with the Global Technical Committee to contribute to and adopt best practices, platform codes, and frameworks.
- Manage suppliers and stakeholders to deliver on business requirements through system enhancements and maintenance.
- Ensuring high availability in production systems is a critical responsibility of this role.
- Own the availability, scalability, latency, and performance of mission-critical services, managing and upholding a 99.999% SLA.
- Design, write, and deliver software and automation to improve system reliability and reduce manual procedures.
- Build robust automation for monitoring, and proactive issue detection to prevent problem recurrence.
- Lead the incident management process, conduct blameless post-mortems, and drive corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement.
Skills & Experiences
- Minimum of a Bachelor degree in software engineering (or related).
- 4+ years of working experience in a technical hands-on software engineering role.
- 2+ years of working experience in a technical leadership role.
- Demonstrable experiences in developing mission-critical systems.
- AWS Technologies (e.g. ECS, DynamoDB, Lambda, Aurora, SQS, SNS, VPC, Private Link, etc.).
- Multi-threading & Socket Programming: Java + Spring Applications.
- Typescript and Node.js Applications.
- Architectures - Event Sourcing, CQRS, Polyglot Database, Traditional OLTP, OLAP.
- DevOps - Provisioning-based Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD.
- QA - Practical TDD, BDD.
- Experiences in payment domains.
- Proven track record in developing and maintaining mission-critical, high-load production systems with 99.999% SLA.
- Proven experience in supporting rapid and agile product deployments across different environments - dev, test, stress-testing, staging/production.
