About us
At Zego, we know that traditional motor insurance holds good drivers back. It’s too complicated, too expensive, and it doesn't take into account how well you actually drive. That’s why, since 2016, we’ve been on a mission to change all of that. Our mission at Zego is to offer the lowest priced insurance for good drivers. From van drivers and gig workers to everyday car drivers, our customers are our driving force – they’re at the heart of everything we do. We’ve sold tens of millions of policies so far, and raised over $200 million in funding. And we’re only just getting started.
About the role
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one to two of Zego’s core technology teams. Each of your teams will comprise 6–8 engineers, including a Tech Lead, and play a key role in how we build and deliver impactful technology. You’ll lead a team working on one of the most pivotal areas of our business – helping bring business and personal insurance to the Zego platform. The work sits at the heart of our product portfolio, and you’ll collaborate with Product, Marketing, and Data to drive initiatives that directly support Zego’s growth and expand our customer reach. This is not a hands‑on coding role, but you’ll bring strong technical foundations and a background as a senior backend or frontend engineer. You’ll help shape technical direction alongside Tech Leads and Staff Engineers. You’ll also be supported by a broader community of engineering leaders and receive mentorship from Senior Engineering Managers, giving you the tools and coaching you need to grow as a people and delivery leader. This role is ideal for someone who has been an Engineering Manager for 1–3 years, is looking to take the next step in their leadership journey, and wants to make a meaningful impact in a high‑growth product environment.
What you will be doing
- Lead and support one or two teams of 6–8 engineers in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment. The size of your scope will depend on your prior experience.
- Drive engineering and operational excellence by setting high standards for system performance, quality, and maintainability.
- Influence architectural decisions in partnership with Tech Leads and Staff Engineers.
- Own delivery outcomes and collaborate with Product, Data, and Marketing to shape objectives and align execution.
- Coach, mentor, and develop your team, helping engineers and Tech Leads grow their careers.
- Continuously improve ways of working, decision‑making processes, and product team maturity.
About you
- You’ve led a team before: You’ve been an Engineering Manager for 1–3 years and are confident in managing a team of 5–8 engineers, with a track record of growing individuals and shipping impactful products.
- You’re outcome‑oriented: You focus on solving real user and business problems, not just shipping features. You help your team stay aligned to measurable goals and iterate effectively.
- You bring technical depth: You have a background in backend or frontend engineering and experience working with distributed systems. You bring credibility when engaging in technical discussions and reviews.
- You care about delivery: You take ownership of execution. You know when to escalate, unblock, and balance delivery speed with quality.
- You invest in engineering excellence: You promote solid design, thoughtful code, and sound decision‑making. You help teams balance pragmatism with long‑term thinking.
- You’re a confident people leader: You support growth through mentoring and development conversations, and you help build a high‑performing, inclusive team culture.
- You give clear and constructive feedback: Whether celebrating great work or navigating tough conversations, you’re comfortable giving feedback that’s timely, respectful, and focused on helping people grow.
- You’re a great communicator: You simplify complex topics for non‑technical stakeholders and help cross‑functional partners make good decisions quickly.
- You will be someone who’s actively curious about how AI can enhance your work – keen to experiment, learn quickly, and apply tools that improve productivity, streamline tasks, or unlock new ways of thinking.
