Zachary Daniels are working exclusively retained with Metacarpal to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer based at the National Robotarium in Edinburgh. Metacarpal are a fast developing, multi-award winning R&D company that has developed the world's first mechanical bionic hand. What makes them unique compared to competitors is that they have designed a bionic hand that is entirely powered and controlled through body motion. This means no electronics. This point of difference is a strong asset, as they can offer greater functionality, reliability and robustness at a lower cost and weight.
Prior to launching their product into production last year, they tested their prototypes with potential customers internationally and received glowing feedback. They have ambitious growth plans to expand quickly across UK, US and then the rest of the world.
Reporting directly to the Senior Design Engineer, the successful candidate will play a significant role in the development, refinement, and scaling of Metacarpal's product ecosystem. This is a hands-on position, working on 360 product projects from inception to product and then post-market improvement. You will work closely with manufacturing, quality and users to continuously improve performance, reliability, and usability, while designing within a regulated medical-device environment.

Responsibilities:- Contribute and lead major design projects and sub-assemblies
- Translate production feedback and real-world user feedback into robust, practical design improvements
- Engage directly with prosthetic users and clinical customers to understand needs and define improvement opportunities
- Design, document, and maintain products in compliance with ISO 13485 and medical-device best practices
- Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS)
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners to ensure designs are clearly communicated, manufacturable, and consistently produced to specification
- Support design verification, validation, and testing activities across prototypes and production units
- Contribute to forward planning of Metacarpal's product roadmap, ensuring designs consider future generations, compatibility, and ecosystem growth
- Participate in supplier engagement and, in time, international travel to support manufacturing and supply-chain development
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Minimum 2 years' experience in an engineering design role
- Experience designing within a regulated or quality-controlled environment
- Proficiency with CAD software - SolidWorks preferred, however not required
