Would you like to join the Sewer Rehabilitation team as a Trainee Project Engineer? We have an exciting opportunity to deliver capital sewer rehabilitation schemes across the region. We are recognised for innovation and sustainability, with a strong track record in delivering cutting-edge solutions, particularly trenchless technologies such as Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining. We are proud members of the UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) and actively promote best practice and continuous improvement in no-dig techniques.
As a Trainee Project Engineer, you will support the delivery of planned sewer rehabilitation projects from outline design through to construction and completion. Are you hands-on and like to take ownership of your work? If so, this role is for you, providing mentorship and support from experienced engineers. You will typically be working independently day-to-day, with guidance, coaching, and technical support available to suit your level of experience and development needs.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with all aspects of the planning and design phase to ensure robust project preparation.
- Supporting the delivery of sewer rehabilitation schemes, including CIPP lining and other trenchless solutions in urban and rural environments.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across environmental, legal, estates, civils, and StreetWorks teams.
- Supporting contractor coordination, financial reporting, and third-party communications.
- Gaining experience in site activities, including inspections and supervision.
- Learning how to ensure compliance with Wessex Water procedures, health and safety standards, and CDM Regulations.
- Actively contributing ideas to improve delivery, sustainability, and innovation within the sewer rehabilitation programme.
We offer a strong culture of learning, mentoring, and professional development, with on-the-job training and opportunities to build expertise in trenchless technologies and sustainable engineering practices.
Are you proactive, well-organised, and motivated to develop your engineering career? This is what you need to succeed in this role. You will have:
- A positive, can-do attitude and a strong work ethic.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- A safety-first mindset and good organisational skills.
In addition, we're looking for someone who:
- Is proficient in Microsoft Office and willing to learn new digital tools (e.g. GIS, CAD, asset management systems).
- Holds a full UK driving licence and can travel across the region.
Exposure to site activities, site supervision, or an awareness of CDM roles and responsibilities would be an advantage, but full training and support will be provided.
What you'll receive:
- A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
- Career progression and professional development opportunities.
- 25 days’ holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
- The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
- The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
- A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
- Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
- The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
- Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
- Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
- Support from trained mental health first aiders.
- A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us.
