Regional Process Scientist in Bridgwater

Are you a scientist interested in a mixture of on-site fieldwork and desk-based activities? If so, we have an excellent opportunity for you to join our team as a Regional Process Scientist! We provide water to 1.4 million customers and treat the sewage of 2.9 million customers. Our Scientists help ensure we protect the environment and comply with the regulatory requirements in the most efficient and safest way possible.

This role will see you travelling to different sites across the entire Wessex Water region, which covers Bristol, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Bridgwater and everything in between.

What you'll do

As a Regional Process Scientist, you will work across the business to ensure compliance with industry best practice and regulatory standards. Your focus will be on preventing statutory nuisance and ensuring adherence to Environment Agency (EA) permit requirements, particularly in relation to odour and fly management across our wastewater assets. This will involve a strong understanding of the implications of compliance and processes. Working as part of a small team, you will assist operations colleagues in odour and fly management.

This is an interesting role that will see you:

• Carry out odour surveys across sites in response to customer complaints or potential encroachment at water recycling centres.
• Demonstrate best practice or to meet EA permit requirements.
• Install odour monitoring equipment, interpreting live data and report back to managers and scientists.
• Monitor odour control units on water recycling centres.
• Monitor and optimise chemicals used to reduce odour in the sewerage network and wastewater assets.
• Carry out fly larvae and adult fly counts, plus completing analysis of the data.
• Ensure compliance with odour and fly management plans so that the company meets Best Practicable Means (BPM), Best Available Technique (BAT) and EA Appropriate Measures.
• Deliver basic operator training on odour and fly management.

What you'll need

We are looking for a flexible, self-motivated, practical individual who can work well with people across various scenarios. The role would suit someone with a science or environmental subject discipline. You should also be willing to undertake survey work on your own in all weathers. You will understand the importance of environmental regulations and have a methodical, analytical and evidence-based approach to your work. This role will require good communication skills to provide clear guidance to a range of audiences, from frontline operational staff to scientists and our senior leadership team.

In addition, it is desirable to have:

• A degree (or equivalent) in science or an environmental subject.
• IT literacy.
• A knowledge of the statutory nuisance regime and EA permitting.
• A knowledge of wastewater treatment processes.
• A knowledge of odour and fly management.
• A full driving licence (a company vehicle will be provided).

Due to the nature of the role, there is an essential duty to carry out odour assessments (sniff testing). Therefore, you will need a good sense of smell to complete the required sniff testing assessments.
