We have an exciting vacancy for a senior arboricultural adviser to join our Environment and Planning Services (EPS) team. This role is based in Bath but requires regular travel throughout the Wessex Water region. The successful candidate will provide in‑house arboricultural advice, develop and implement tree safety surveys, manage tree works, and support diverse projects from design to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in‑house arboricultural advice and support to engineering, construction and operational projects.
  • Appoint and manage external tree consultants and monitor their performance.
  • Develop and implement a programme of tree safety surveys across the Wessex Water landholdings.
  • Manage tree works arising from safety surveys.
  • Work closely with design engineers and project managers to minimise ecological impacts and risks.
  • Deliver arboricultural surveys, tree impact assessments and the design and delivery of mitigation and construction support.

Qualifications

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Level 5 arboricultural qualification (HND level or above).
  • LANTRA Professional Tree Inspection qualification or equivalent.
  • Practical experience of tree safety assessment using QTRA, VALID or similar methods.
  • Qualified to carry out AIA according to BS5837.
  • Experience in undertaking tree safety inspections and prescribing management actions.
  • Practical understanding of trees and their management in construction projects.
  • Good communication skills for developing new processes, procedures and workflows.
  • Experience managing contractors and consultants.
  • Strong report‑writing skills.
  • Applied understanding of the UK planning process and legal framework.
  • Proactive and flexible approach focused on successful project delivery.
  • Good IT skills, including CAD and experience with GIS systems (ArcGIS).

Advantageous if:

  • Professional member of the Arboricultural Association.
  • Experience working proactively with engineering teams throughout design and construction.

Eligibility & Practical Information

Due to the nature of travelling around the Wessex Water region, a full clean driving licence is essential. This role includes a car allowance.
