Do you have an interest in the environment and want to work in a role that actively reduces pollution? Do you enjoy working outdoors and being part of a team? If so, we have a great opportunity for you as a Sewage Misuse Prevention Operative. This role will see you travel across the whole Wessex Water region, which covers Bristol, Salisbury, Bournemouth, Bridgwater and everything in between.

What you\’ll do

Your aim is to prevent streams and watercourses from becoming polluted. You will do this by inspecting surface water outfalls and sewers to identify misconnections, while also proving and recording any misconnections identified. You will have a keen focus on the health and safety of yourself, your colleagues, contractors and the general public. Day to day, you will follow up on private misconnections to ensure correction, investigate reported incidents and work alongside third parties to investigate pollutions or unauthorized discharges. You will liaise with the property owners to give advice where possible and produce paper/electronic forms to correct misconnections.

What you\’ll need

To succeed in this role, you will be a confident, self-motivated individual who is an effective team worker with excellent public liaison skills, as well as having a positive work ethic to see the job through until completion.

  • An understanding of sewerage networks and drainage
  • Good IT knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel and Teams
  • The ability to think methodically and break down a problem into workable sections
  • GCSEs at grades B or 6 in English and maths
  • The ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • A can-do attitude and the willingness to get stuck in
  • The ability to work around sewage and lift manholes safely (full PPE will be provided)
  • Experience with handling customer expectations and reactions

Due to the travel requirements for this role, holding a valid driving licence is essential. A company vehicle will be provided.
