This role will initially focus on managing contractors and consultants, assessing the harm and impact of storm overflows on the receiving water courses. These investigations will inform and support the delivery of a challenging programme of improvements required to meet our Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and Storm Overflow Assessment Framework (SOAF) targets, helping to ensure regulatory compliance and ecological standards are met. The role will also include internal delivery of water quality studies in parallel with consultants to support design decisions on a range of projects.
What you'll do:
- Lead the delivery of Urban Pollution Management (UPM) studies and water quality modelling by both external consultants.
- Carry out impact and harm assessments for storm overflow spill reduction solutions.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of WINEP schemes, ensuring alignment with environmental objectives.
- Apply SOAF principles to assess impact and prioritise environmental outcomes.
- Organise and manage work for consultants, contractors and colleagues, and undertake quality assurance on their outputs.
- Help to develop and train an in-house capability for future UPM studies.
- Present findings to internal teams, regulators and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with regulatory bodies, consultants and local authorities on water quality improvement initiatives.
What you'll need:
- A strong understanding of Urban Pollution Management (UPM) and its application in catchment planning.
- Experience with water quality modelling tools (e.g., InfoWorks ICM UPM River Impact Assessment module, UPM-RAT, SAGIS-SIMCAT or similar).
- Experience in water quality monitoring.
- Experience with harm assessments and impact assessments in the context of water quality.
- Knowledge of UK and EU water quality regulations (e.g., Water Framework Directive, Environmental Permitting Regulations and Section 82 of the Environment Act 2021).
- A degree in a relevant field.
- Excellent IT and communication skills.
- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
- Comfortable working on your own or as part of a team.
- Comfortable managing your time to ensure deadlines are met.
It would also be beneficial for you to have:
- Proficiency using data analysis toolsets (e.g., Excel, R, GIS and Python).
- A valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork.
- Chartership, or close to becoming a chartered member, of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIWEM or ICE).
All other relevant training required will be provided.
What you'll receive:
- A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
- Career progression and professional development opportunities.
- 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
- The opportunity to sell up to five days of holiday every year.
- The opportunity to buy up to ten days of holiday each year (subject to conditions).
- A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
- Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
- The opportunity to lease a new electric car through salary sacrifice (subject to conditions).
- Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
- Access to an interactive health and wellbeing platform.
- Support from trained mental health first aiders.
- A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone who is successfully recruited by us.
